Fan girls. I know if I met Garry Trudeau I’d be all like, “Hi Mr. Trudeau. Nice to meet you.”

It all started with Valleyspeak. (San Fernando Valley) As an English major, my daughter knows I dislike it, so as a ‘tween she’d invite her girlfriends over to torture me- until I piped up in their midst out-Valleying them-to my daughter’s shame, eliciting the plaintive daughter’s anguished cry:Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad!

Remove “like” and “it was like” from the American English language and you will have the quietest country on Earth.

Several folks above have mentioned the May 1973 strip (referring to John Mitchell and Watergate) where Mark Slackmeyer proclaims “Guilty! Guilty! Guilty!” The last panel of that is my new temporary Facebook profile picture.

Here’s hoping for a long sentence (for the blithering idiot who can’t put a long sentence together.)

Trumps’s defense attorney was on CNN hours after the verdict, trying desperately to find something to say that was worth hearing. Hope he enjoyed working for free,

So earlier this morning I was going to comment that this reminds me of an early episode of Friends where Rachel’s rich gal pals show up at the coffee house and keep squealing as they catch up on news, so of course Monica and Phoebe have to make fun of them. Well, guess which episode just aired on TBS? (It’s like my super power – being able to predict which rerun from the 80’s and 90’s will air within the next day or two.)

Are certain words creeping into their conversation? Words like “swell?” And “so’s your old man?”

In 1994 IBM launched its OS/2 Warp operating system, with a bunch of subtitled ads showing groups of people people around the world (I remember French fishermen and Czech nuns) discussing how great it was. My favourite ad (which I unfortunately can’t find easily on YT) showed what was apparently a California corporate project team having a meeting on a beach, mostly in surfer gear, using California-speak (not far removed from Valley Girl talk). I remember one young woman saying, “But is it totally tubular?”, translated in the subtitles as “But will it meet our corporate requirements?”

A good example that “guys” is no longer gender-specific.
