It’s nice being white (now doesn’t that sound racist). I’m white because of a mutation some distant ancestor of mine had that lightened skin color. This means my body can make vitamin D with the sunshine available at latitudes far away from the tropics. Today, people can buy vitamin D in a bottle, so this evolutionary advantage isn’t as great as it used to be.
Being white comes at a cost: a greater chance of skin damage and cancer due to ultraviolet radiation. It can happen to anyone of any skin color but is more prevalent among people with lighter skin.
Dermatologists recommend using sun block when going out in the sun. Take them seriously. It’s literally the ounce of prevention applied one dose at a time.
Also, “tan up” gradually. Limit your exposure to 15 minutes initially and work your way up adding just a bit more time in each subsequent outing.
Then there is one more pet peeve of mine. If you are going to be out in the hot sun: hydrate. Don’t drink WHEN you get thirsty. Drink so you don’t GET thirsty. It is exceptionally difficult to overdose on water.
And yet our ancestors survived for hundreds of thousands of years before the invention of sunscreen. And all by the simple expedient of going outside every day and getting a tan, and occasionally wearing a hat.
They couldn’t have done this comic back in the old days. Hard to show a sunburn in a black and white comic. She’d have had to have been burned to a crisp and that would have caused all kinds of other issues and questions.
WOW!!!! It’s amazing that GoComics has figured out how to bend the space-time continuum such that the comments feature will work on everything but political cartoons.
I think that the colorist could have done a bit better. Jane looked pretty pasty in the first panels. The last panel—where she presumably has been well cooked by the sun—she looks like what I would consider a “normal” skin tone. A brighter red would have been more appropriate.

The sun isn’t hotter than it was 50 years ago, you’re just indoors all the time.
If you go out regularly during the colder months, your skin will be ready for summer.
And yes, that applies to people with darker skin, as well.

That has to be a record for the fastest sunburn in the world, and that’s centuries before climate change even existed.
