Lessee—Rosalyn will get into the house by breaking a downstairs window, a neighbor will call the police who will arrive and nab her just as she’s about to strangle Calvin, she’s taken downtown where she’s booked, fingerprinted, with mug shots taken, Mom and Dad are notified, CPS is called in… Hey, Bill—ever think of this as a plot line. LOL??
When this strip was last reprinted five years ago, I mentioned the fact that Hobbes is looking out of the window and telling Calvin what is happening outside while Calvin is looking away from the window. I mentioned this as another piece of evidence to support Bill Watterson’s statement that he did not see Hobbes as part of Calvin’s imagination.
Connie_Shearer replied to me, “I hate to spoil your fantasy but Calvin is imagining what Rosalyn is doing and imagining Hobbes telling Calvin about it so that Calvin can congratulate himself on locking the downstairs windows. Mind you, Bill Watterson may prefer your interpretation to mine.”
In May 2022, Connie changed her tune. This was when the strip in which Hobbes had written a story and Calvin began reading it to the class was reprinted. Calvin read, “How Hobbes the handsome hero tiger saved the day – no thanks to Calvin the time-travelling chowderhead” He then shouted “WHAT!?” Connie_Shearer commented, “For once I agree with Calvinist1966. Calvin would never write that about himself.” Another reader replied to Connie, “Yet Calvin obviously did,”
Another memory I have from when this strip appeared five years ago is of a reader commenting, “Time for Rosalyn to introduce a brick to the window. It will be a smashing friendship.” I replied, “Do you mean that Calvin and Rosalyn will become friends and go around smashing windows?” The commentator replied to me, “I meant that the brick would have a smashing friendship with the window. Lame, I know.”
I think that the idea of a friendship developing between Calvin and Rosalyn would be quite an entertaining one. This was hinted at towards the end of the ten year run when Calvin and Rosalyn played Calvinball together.
With Calvin’s luck, Rosalyn will find that he didn’t lock the back door or possibly the outside door to the basement (if they have one). That’s the way it goes ! ! !
My Mother absolutely hated Calvin when she was alive. She thought he was spoiled and undisciplined and a complete monster. I kept telling her that was the point. Besides, if he were completely nice, he’d be on Peanuts, not here in his very own comic strip.

Break a window, you really think that his parents will be upset with YOU…and you can always say you were protecting Hobbes from a psychopath.

Wow, you start off feeling bad for Calvin, I remember hating babysitters, but he really deserves what he’s gonna get.

The upstairs windows are open, she’s smart, but the parents should, in the future, leave her a key, too.
