This strip has nothing to do with The Former Guy. Kudos to Mr. Trudeau for his restraint; I hope we see more of it in at least the next two Sunday strips. :-)
Any chance that we can show as much restraint as Mr. Trudeau? Any at all?! :-|
The cause of violence is not ignorance. It is self-interest. Only reverance can restrain violence – reverance for human life and the environment. —- William Sloane Coffin
So what will cause a child to become a sociopath?
There are certain factors that seem to increase the risk of creating and developing an antisocial personality disorder. Some are: the determination that there was childhood conduct disorder; a family history of antisocial personality disorder or other personality disorders ; and/or experiencing abuse or neglect during childhood.
ASSIGNMENT FOR TODAY: Try hard to think of anyone alive who you know is a sociopath and can have a strong negative influence and destructive control of your future if they are given the means and power to do so.
Reality: Local story. Mother was at work and family was supposed to watch kids. They put the 7 month old in a tub and just left it there. The baby drowned. Much Autonomy is not good!!
I spent the summer I was 7 on the beach with no supervision other than 12 and a 13 year old cousins who never cared where I was. I didn’t surf, but I leaped from rock to rock on jetties and swam amongst the jellyfish and sunburned to blisters. Nights we had fires sometimes. Was this a good thing or a bad thing? I can’t say. We survived. When I was 9 kids played unsupervised on the city streets. The youngest boy in the next apartment was hospitalized with burns from a warning flare he tried to play with – it was maybe 10 at night. The police were harsh speaking to his parents, asking what he was even doing out at that hour. It was 1951. His parents didn’t understand why the police were angry with them.
I’m reminded of the scene in Lucifer’s Hammer. We got a pretty good character sketch of a surfer trying to ride out the impact tsunami, right up till he splatted on Santa Monica Blvd.
“I remember when parents let their kids go out and play without being helicopters all the time. Sure, a few kids died, but none of them were me, so everything came out okay.”
Two drops of water, floating on a wave approaching the shore. One drop, noticing that the waves were crashing against the shore, exclaimed to the other, “Look ahead! The waves are being crushed! We’re just drops of water; we’ll be killed!” The second drop said, “Do not fear. We are not drops of water. We are the ocean.”

Curious: Did the Old Master always talk like Yoda or was he created prior to “The Empire Strikes Back” and the Yoda-speak was a later development? :-)

Tell me, “Master”—did your parents also leave you in a closed car under the hot sun, too?

“Old Man, how is it that you can surf these waves?”
“Young Man, how that you cannot, is it?”
