Is it true only male characters say Hmmmm. If so, I would surmise female characters say Hrrrrrr.

She’s got the “Mmm hmm” covered too.

I think only the bad guys say HMMMMM when they’re planning a bank job…..

If I remember correctly, there’s a scene in Dune where two characters interject quite a lot of humming into their dialogue. This goes on for several paragraphs without explanation before Herbert finally informs the reader that this is a form of secret language. The characters are speaking in the Harkonnen palace on a topic that’s definitely not safe to allow the Baron’s agents to overhear.
