I bought a used 2015 Nissan Leaf EV in 2017 for $9,750. Nobody wanted them then. It was so cheap to charge and so much fun to drive. Range was not so hot but it met99% of our needs. In 2022 I sold it back to the dealer for $9,000 cash because everybody wanted an EV. Gas was expensive. I bought a Tesla. After the initial excitement it just runs, gets a software update, just runs, gets another software update, just runs, (repeat). I usually keep a car four to six years. Maybe hydrogen powered next…..although I do miss that little Leaf. Maybe I’ll stop by the Nissan dealership……
Don’t do it Brutus. Set Garage on fire – house burns down.. Expensive batteries. Limited driving distance. Extremely heavy rear end. 4 or 5 friends with them and not one happy. But there’s coming a day when might be all electric. But far far away.
When internal combustion engine autos were new they were very expensive. It wasn’t until some 20 years later that Ford brought an affordable car for the masses. Back then you had to go to the general store and buy kerosene to take home and mix to run your car. Gasoline was found to work better some 15 years later. It took that 20 years to get gas stations built, and longer to have them on every corner. Short sightedness had the naysayers then saying ‘Get a horse’. Some people never change.
I would love to have an electric truck for local use. There are charging stations where I work, and with a a range of 300 miles, I would never have an issue with low power.
I’ve recently got an EV (thanks to company scheme that is tax efficient), if you can drive a car with automatic transmission – you should have no trouble with an EV (though it has a switch instead of a transitional level to put it in drive/reverse)
What is harder is all the moving of controls to touch screens/bars and the electronic driver assists that want to interfere for false positives (mine wants to fight me when I move back into inside lane if I don’t indicate)
My wife loves hers. She keeps saying, “why did I hold out for so long?” I’m about ready to purchase one for me. $6.00 a week to pick up kids, do appts., run errands, take wifey out on date nights. So quite you can relax while driving. Yep. Getting rid of of Caddy.
It’s a thought at least. If you don’t have a regular need to drive the maximum range of the battery, it might be an OK option. However, she does have a point as to all the electronics etc. I am a dinosaur and just use my electronics as a tool and have never explored all the options, etc. available on a cell phone let alone an electric car, nor would I have a car smarter than I am or has the capacity to drive itself. Might want to look at a hybrid instead. Baby steps my man, baby steps…..
I am 84 yo and will never have an electric vehicle. California has problems keeping the power on. How much of this is caused from charging vehicles. Besides mining the lithium and and disposing of the batteries creates more pollution than driving an EV saves. Then there is the problem of EV’s burning themselves to the ground.
@cracker65- You must be talking about that "aircraft carrier’, the Tesla Cyber Truck. To me, all it’s good for is taking up space! Especially for parking! But as they say today: “…if that’s what floats your boat…”

They’re ‘Not Safe at any Speed’… The batteries are extremely dangerous, especially in an accident, and contribute to toxic waste in any case.

I’ll get ready for that when you can walk down the street to the corner station for a can of electricity to get you going again.

I’d consider one when the technology has matured, and the infrastructure built out.
