To save the imperiled spotted owl from potential extinction, U.S. wildlife officials are embracing a contentious plan to deploy trained shooters into dense West Coast forests to kill almost a half-million barred owls that are crowding out their smaller cousins.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service on Wednesday was expected to release its final plan to prop up declining spotted owl populations in Oregon, Washington state and California. The Associated Press obtained details in advance.
The plan calls for killing up to 470,000 barred owls over three decades after the birds from the eastern U.S. encroached into the territory of two West Coast owls: northern spotted owls and California spotted owls. The smaller spotted owls have been unable to compete for food and habitat with the invaders.
I live in London on the parkland walk. There were a couple owls nearby, I could often hear them. On night it was so loud it must have been in our garden. I regret not going to take a look.
I once saw a pilated woodpecker, a rare sighting in a town. Another time an owl flew across the car on a back road. It flew sideways and we saw it from the bottom with full wingspan, it was huge!!
Some things are worth the trouble — the northern lights (or southern), a meteor shower, baby toads appearing all over in a mass emergence, or just hunting nightcrawlers for going fishing in the morning.
Only seen an owl once in the wild (heard them hundreds of times). It was daytime and the crows were buzzing what looked like a cat in a tree. Then the “cat” flew to a different tree.
A friend of the family had a great horned owl stuffed and mounted back in the 80’s – it was amazing to see up close and pet the fluffy feathers
I went out for an evening walk one night a couple of years ago, here in my tiny rural-New Hampshire town, and a HUGE owl swooped down right over my head and soared off into the darkness. I don’t know what kind it was, but it was amazing. Big enough that I could hear it flapping, and close enough above my head that I felt the breeze of it passing and got a whiff of a dusty, feathery scent.
I love how this strip has both the parents be a little crazy too sometimes, not just the kids. Always fun to see those “I see where he gets it” moments XD

We know where Wallace gets his love of nature from. Better go look, Wallace. Maybe the owl belongs to a Barred Bigfoot.

In our area (Mid-north Indiana), the Barred Owl is pushing out the larger Great Horned Owl. The Barred Owl is an aggressive bird, even for a raptor.

If you succeed in catching an owl, and cooking it and eating it. You will have owls in your bowels.
