“The only one I gave that deadline” is inexcusably ungrammatical. Correct is, “the only one to whom I gave that deadline.” C’mon, Mallett. Wormwood is better educated than that.

Caulfield needs deadlines as a motivation?

Mrs. O gave this deadline to C to show him he isn’t the only trickster in the room. She knows him so well.

That’s why she’s the teacher and he will always be the student.
