Yep, that’s exactly what we feel every time we have gone out for a walk in the cold weather and come home again. Luckily, we do have an infrared sauna, that we usually fire up in those cases to warm up again. Funny how that works, getting hot from the excercise and cooling down after so you get the chills.
I don’t think he even got up. My Janis comes in and it’s hot to her because of being cold. Then her body thermostat adjusted and now it’s cold because she got used to the inside heat.
When I first come in from taking a walk in cold weather the house seems quite warm. After a few minutes, it doesn’t seem too warm anymore. The thermostat is set at 69 degrees and I am comfortable with that during the day.
Janis is a bit ego-centric here, and only considers the world from her viewpoint. The hard part for Arlo is that Janis doesn’t realize she is that way.
The only times I’ve ever lied to my wife is when I’ve told her I changed the temperature on the thermostat. She’s always comfortable a short time later. :-)
This isn’t about the thermostat. When you’ve been out in the cold, entering into a nicely warm house can seem uncomfortably hot, but if you turn the temperature down you’ll soon be feeling chilly as your body acclimates.
If we think about it, we can react either way when coming in from the cold or heat depending on whether we had adjusted to it before coming in. If still feels really cold outside it will not feel warm enough when we come in, but if we were comfortable in the chill outside we won’t appreciate 25C or 75F in the house. After I shovel the driveway it always feels like an oven when I go in the house.
About 20 years ago my wife and I took a trip in March to Yellowknife, NWT, Canada to see the aurora borealis. Outdoor temps at night were -35F. Upon returning to the hotel around midnight I asked the desk clerk why they kept the lobby so hot. He replied , “It’s 65F here in the lobby. By walking through the front door you just changed 100 degrees in temperature.”
I spent the first 60 years of my life feeling too hot. Husband would argue with me that I needed to wear warmer clothes, I would turn the heat down from where he had set it.
Then those dreadful changes came and I am cold all the time now. When they first started I was turning the heat up all the time – and, just as husband warned me – I could get sick from being too warm and I did.
We belong to an 18th century reenacting unit. At an event one time, shortly after the change over to being cold all time, I suddenly felt warmer as the (modern) heat came on in our headquarters. I said to myself under my breath – “Now I don’t feel cold – nice.” One of the other (than my husband) heard me and laughed a friendly laugh. Realized he must be going through same with his wife as they are about the same age as us.
But being cold is a problem, especially at December event we do with the unit. If I need to use a bathroom I have to leave the 18th century we are in and go to a modern built building elsewhere to use the bathroom – and that involves getting something warm to put on – either my un-period, ruins the mood winter jacket or the repro full length cloak I made for myself which I can barely lift – I used to be able to run the bathroom during the event without needing a coat (at least as to not feeling cold).
