These days, there is also “live” streaming of many sporting events (like when Paramount+ streams an event that is also on CBS) and the “live” stream can lag as much as a minute or two.
Radio broadcasts are delayed 7 seconds so they can be bleeped in case of the utterance of a forbidden word. TV probably uses satellite transmission and a bleep delay. Why I could never watch the Vikings while listening to the radio (Paul Allen is an HOF legend). I used to work for a telecommunications equipment manufacturer and we had a satellite delay device. Maybe I should break out the Raspberry Pi and try to build a delay circuit.
Arlo paused the telecast while he went to the kitchen to get a beer and chips and salsa. Meanwhile, Janice continues to listen to the game live on radio. She knows that the field goal kicker is going to miss, thus setting up Arlo to lose the bet.
Went to a restaurant that had two TVs side by side tuned to the same channel. One TV was about 3 – 4 seconds behind the other. It was kind of weird watching them.
So let me get this straight…Janis spends the entire time listening to the game in another room while Arlo is in the den watching the very same game just so she can take advantage of such an odd occurrence if per chance it arises? Wow, I wonder what would motivate a woman to do such a thing? What would happen if he was flipping channels between games?
The film, “The Sting,” never interested me, for I learned that, while the plot is set in 1936, the film’s score is primarily ragtime—and ragtime was popular from 1899 through only 1918 or so. Then the ’20’s came in with jazz, Louis Armstrong and His Hot Five! By 1936, big band jazz was in full swing, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Glenn Miller, and the like. Now, the film did wonders for Scott Joplin’s glorious ragtime (piano) music, but for 1936 was very anachronistic. It would be just like a movie set in 1987, but using music from 1969, the last year the Beatles were still together. But Joplin’s wonderful music! Popularizing that was perhaps the most wonderful musical by-product any film ever had.
I did that to my son 3 years ago on the coin toss for the Super Bowl. I knew he was watching via streaming, and so was I. But I also have an outdoor antenna and checked, sure enough the stream was on a delay. We had been already texting, so I had enough time to bet him knowing the coin toss result. When I told him he loved it.
the old M*A*S*H gag episode with the race for the pennant 1951 Dodgers were up 16 games and the Giants came back and forced a three-game playoff, the Bobby Thompson Walk off in game 3 they all had a running bet, Charles and Klinger and a fake radio broadcast to fool Charles
My FIL used to listen to radio while I watched the basketball game. Drove me nuts. Picking up games on my antenna also was way ahead of those using DISH or other systems….
Welcome to Super Bowl Sunday, the U.S.‘s annual celebration of commerce and branding. We cheer NFL franchises to see which owners/cities invested most judiciously on athletic bodies and micromanaging coaches, and wait with anticipation to see our lauded corporations spend millions on ads and marketing firms to entertain us in 30 seconds or less. Whilst feasting on non-nutritive foods that have tempted viewers all season, hopefully contributing to the obesity and hypertension that will force us to buy medicines to offset the physical damage. And if that hasn’t cost enough, there are plenty of opportunities to wager online one’s dwindling cash resources. Enjoy!
This is true. A game was on in one of the break rooms where I work, but I noticed that the score didn’t match what my sports app said. A couple of minutes later, the broadcast caught up to reality.
This is one of those strips where I needed the comments to understand what was happening, so thanks! My confusion was partly due to not following football so I didn’t know what “he shanked it” meant, plus not being aware of the degree of time lags between media outlets.
As long as Arlo and Janis have been together, he should have been a bit suspicious with her suddenly sitting down and making a bet. I don’t see Janis betting on anything unless it is a sure thing…
I was at a super bowl party a few years ago. They had Tivo and would pause and restart. I started streaming the game in real time through my hearing aids. After awhile the crowd was amazed at how much I knew about the game and players and with my ability to predict what plays were likely to be called and their outcomes. Sadly I was not able to make any money as they were not a betting crowd.
When Richard Feynman was a boy, circa 1920, he built a crystal wire radio set which picked up an earlier out of town radio broadcast of a program that his parents would listen to on a later broadcast that evening on the family radio. He would then sit around and predict what was going to happen on the show…

So, was the radio signal faster than the satellite TV signal allowing for the advance knowledge of the field goal outcome?

I wish they would sync up. Especially during the LSU games. I would rather listen to the LSU radio people than the television announcers.

Even though she’s just a comic character, this doesn’t make me think well of Janis. I hope she at least buys him lunch.
