My first husband made me account for every item on the grocery tape. (This was before the UPC scan put the names on the tape.) I’d take the money he allowed for groceries and lock my purse in the trunk so I couldn’t overspend. I still had to write it all on the tape.
A far cry from Hubby’s insistence that "as long as you’re my wife, you are never broke.
Half a dozen things that just look good right now, not the thing you went for. That’s how they get you, because you’ve got to go back. Repeat for a booming economy.
I write up the shopping list in my cell phone as we go along day to day. There are several lists as one for each type of store. This way I always know what we need when we go in a store. When we are going to go specifically food shopping (as in it is about to snow, better stock up) I run through a list I have of foods we use (also in the phone) to check if anything I have not thought of is also needed.
Then there are the items which stay on the list and stay and stay as never in the store again.

The Siren call of the hardware store was too hard to resist. As was the smell of fresh donuts of the bakery next door.

Once I went shopping for my mother. I had her list. How was I to know that “dill” was for the spice? She wanted pickles.

Or you over buy a “pick up order” to get something and that’s the one thing they ran out of.

I went to Sams Club to buy pork chops. I came home with a floor jack, jack stands, a battery charger and a case of Pennzoil. No pork chops of course.

The hardware store sells milk, bread and T.P. they are right next to the snow shovels. At twice the price of the grocery store.
