When I was stationed in Japan, my wife and I frequently visited Tokyo and used the subway. The first problem was that the doors were less than 6 feet tall and we aren’t. After banging our heads the first couple of times we learned to duck.
We would ride along, straphanging and hold a conversation over the heads of several Tokyo residents between us.
I was riding the streetcar with my grandmother. When she got off the car by the rear door, the conductor didn’t see me and closed the door on my leg. In my mind’s eye I can see my grandmother running for blocks, holding me up by my shoulders, but it couldn’t have been more than a few steps before all the passengers started yelling “the little girl is stuck”. I was in my late 20s before I would risk getting off the back door of a bus or streetcar again.

My wife is vertically challenged. Some years ago I suggested her wearing a bathroom plunger with a chin strap and a pennant flying. She disagreed.
