And Jesus was a sailor when he walked upon the water….
He said all men will be sailors then until the sea shall free them / But he himself was broken, long before the sky would open / Forsaken, almost human, he sank beneath your wisdom like a stone.
Given where surfing originated, Hawaii, which wouldn’t be known to the civilization based around the Mediterranean at around 0AD, I think we can safely say, Jesus didn’t surf.
A Messianic Jewish friend of mine likes to point out the Gospel of Mark’s description of this episode as proof of Jesus’ sense of humor, because it mentions Jesus ‘Would have passed them [his disciples] by’ in the water. They were tossing and turning in a terrible storm, and he was basically walking past them on the water going “Hey guys.”
Anyone still dreaming of a white Christmas? I’m in Wisconsin, and nary a snowflake in sight. Nor any in the forecast. (Not that I’m complaining, mind. I dislike hot weather, so my wife does the mowing; she hates the cold, so I do the blowing. This year has been like a vacation cruise for me.)
“…is a Jesus who surfs any less believable than one who walks on water?”
A fair questions, especially for those who find a lot of things unbelievable.
However: on the Compuserve fora I used to frequent, one could post seasonal greetings with a hope of reaching the whole community. Here on GC, things work differently, and in essence it’s a whole new forum each day. However, there are quite a few of my friends here, and this is as good a place as any to post my good wishes for them, and for a world with (at least) less suffering. My text is from Greg Lake and Pete Sinfield:

How does the parting of the sea work into the King of the Surf version of the Bible?

As plausible a theory as any.

The lead pastor at my church would love this one; it’s his kind of humor.
To put it in context, he has been known to bring a guitar up into the pulpit with him.

If he taught the Apostles to surf as well, he might have avoided that whole thing with Judas

Hmmm. Long hair, great tan, walked on water, unbelievably chill…. Yep. Jesus was a surfer!

In the last panel, did Garry draw the Master as Michelangelo painted God on the Sistine Chapel by coincidence?

Flip flops have a different flap depending on who’s wearing them? Interesting. I never knew that before.

I guess Zonker felt like it would be safe to leave the business in Zipper’s “capable” hands for awhile.

A nice touch to have The Master’s surfboard have the Vans checkboard logo on it.

Jesus was also an expert fishing guide. When He wasn’t making really good wine (John 2:10) to keep the party going.

Since God created the whole universe, then walking on water is a trivial act.
