OK, where’s the rum?? LOL. OK, but seriously, I think I can understand why Alex is so PO’d—she gave her father a present (albeit by dishonest means), and the only thanks she got was a lecture on honesty and integrity. Sorry, but in this arc, Mike comes off like Dad in “Calvin & Hobbes”—a character I don’t like at all!
This whole arc reminds me of a brilliant original song (not a parody, though stylistically it is modeled on anthems like “We Are the World”) by Weird Al Yankovic called “Don’t Download This Song” (which he made available for free downloading on his website). Based on the lyrics, Al obviously felt that people like Mike and the RIAA were overstating their case somewhat.
Where does anyone stand on used CDs & record sales, private or commercial? i seem to remember that the Industry tried hard to supress that market. About 90+% of my music collection consists of used LPs & CDs.
Frank Zappa: “The RIAA has shown a certain disregard for the creative people of the industry in its eagerness to protect the revenues of the record companies.”
It is a parent’s responsiblityto enforce the moral compass settings until children go out on their own in the world. Parents can often be implicated in a child’s crimes these days.
Alex gets, and Mike does not, that the architecture of the Internet is founded upon communal ownership of all information. To defeat Soviet Communism, the inventors of ARPANET had to adopt fully-automatic luxury space communism. (Minus space.) So Mike’s scolding is preaching for a dead god.
The use to put copy protection on VHS/DVD so you could not make a copy without a special stabilizer. The never put protection on cds so you could burn a copy on your computer or if you had a cd recorder.
YO HO HO! In an era where series are no longer released on DVD and streaming channels can decide to cancel their series or films, piracy is the only right answer.

She needs to be pirating music by Alestorm. There is nothing like “Scottish Pirate Metal” to accompany you on your online pirating raids!
