Luann by Greg Evans and Karen Evans for September 12, 2012
Transcript:
Toni: "You want Quill to declare his love on his own. That's why we have to get your letter back?" Luann: "But how?" Brad: "Darn. Forgot my jaws of life" Toni: "There must be a way" Luann: "Gum and a coat hanger?" Brad: "Isn't it illegal to tamper w-" Officer: "FREEZE!"
9thCapricorn over 12 years ago
Just listen to Toni parrot about Quill needing to declare love first. I wanna whack her on the head. Now just WHO said “FREEZE!” I hope Toni did not get Brad into trouble – she was the one who dragged him into it.

I do hope Brad has a change of uniform pants available, because I think he just ruined the ones he’s currently wearing!

Remember Dirk said he was going to be a cop? I wonder…

2 unemployed firemen in the near future?
stanr888 over 12 years ago
Drop That Flashlight! It might go off by accident. You’re all under arrest for shining a flashlight at the mailbox at night while two of you are wearing uniforms of the fire department.
stanr888 over 12 years ago
Clearly, the two of you are impersonating a Fire Person (?man?)?
jeff_e over 12 years ago
What Starfire said. And I’m pretty sure it’ll be Dirk. Wearing aviator shades in the dead of night.
babsbybend over 12 years ago
That would explain everything.
babsbybend over 12 years ago
The Luann universe is so limited, it could only be Dirk or T.J., or (very long shot) one of the school’s two faculty members.
Sisyphos over 12 years ago
BUSTED! And Toni hasn’t even even really “tampered” yet! But is it really a cop? Or is it a postal worker (improbable as that might seem at this hour)? Or Dirk?

Amen to that, we never see any police on our street or even in our neighborhood. I have see a sum total of maybe 3 or 4 in 2 years, and they were taking a shortcut, because they were not our town police but the village next to us.
TORAD_07 over 12 years ago
Well, it;s either Dirk (if real), or TJ or Knute playing a joke on them, if not. But how they’d have known to be right at that mailbox at the right time would be interesting! If it is Dirk, it could be that Dirk is still stalking Toni/Brad. Not good!
If it’s just some other real LEO, then I guess we’ll have to see what Mr. Evans has in the plan.

Talker123 over 12 years ago
Tampering with the mail is a federal offense. If convicted, it is a felony and would end the firefighting careers of Toni and Brad. The next strip will be very interesting.

Why does QUILL have to be the one declaring love first? What if he is waiting on her to do the declaring?

I think it’s time for Brad to seriously evaluate his relationship with Toni, like it’s time to cut your losses and move on.

I think I saw this in an “I Love Lucy” episode!
Cofyjunky over 12 years ago
It IS illegal. What the hell is Toni thinking???
Endunamoo over 12 years ago
Uhm, I thought Dirk was dying of cancer or something. I could’ve sworn that was part of the storyline back when he was a garbage man. Been too long…
Dirk at this point would be lame and so would an on duty cop, both possibilities are mind bogglingly low IMHO.
ginkens001 over 12 years ago
Maybe he needs to write you out of the strip.
2Goldfish over 12 years ago
How stupid.
melmarsh9v over 12 years ago
It simply makes no sense for Toni to be so overly concerned about Luann’s teenage “love life!” Eep…
Hectoruno over 12 years ago
I am sure it was a fire emergency. They heard that an arsonist was sending flammable mail. This young lady with them believes the arsonist may have stole her identity and is there to identify her letter.
PatrickASL over 12 years ago
Dirk says he wanted to become a cop. Wouldn’t it be funny if the cop turned out to be him?
s_hummingbird over 12 years ago
I think the “cop” is TJ and he will have a lame-brained idea (but it will probably work) on how to get the envelope out.
SwimsWithSharks over 12 years ago
They’re busted for conspiracy to tamper. TJ will break them out of prison and they’ll flee to Australia.
ncalifgirl58 over 12 years ago
Think we all know the justice system is seriously flawed….
Hoodude over 12 years ago
Toni’s flashlight is Speilbergian
melmarsh9v over 12 years ago
Another flaw is that Toni is acting out of character by having a panic attack over Luann’s personal affairs. In the past, Toni was known for being sensible and level-headed. Maybe this comic just is not what it used to be.
Kathe over 12 years ago
It may not be a cop but someone on neighborhood watch…like Dirk or Ox or Gunther or…Gunther? Forget that!

Toni is bad news.
angusdad over 12 years ago
Except that they haven’t done anything illegal – yet. It’s not a crime to shine a flashlight on a mailbox
txfirefighter over 12 years ago
Unless one is completely asinine about being PC, “fireman” is still generally accepted by the public.
txfirefighter over 12 years ago
It must be because I’ve never heard a cop yell at someone to “FREEZE” (except the Dukes of Hazzard).
9thCapricorn over 12 years ago
Folks, take DIRK out of the equation. He has a PRISON record and cannot be a cop. He was just talking big when he first got out and was seen doing trash on their route. Anyone with a brain knows that – an ex-felon talking big and nonsense.I certainly hope Greg has a brain and will not make Dirk a cop.Now WHO would prowl the neighborhood at NIGHT? Oh yeah, someone like GEORGE ZIMMERMAN – neighborhood watch patrol. Cops are also known to patrol residential streets especially if it is a bad neighborhood but I doubt the DeGroots live in a such neighborhood UNLESS they happen to live close to the throughway road which would explain the mailbox.

I agree with those that think its T.J. Also I’m glad a live in a small town, murder happens about once a decade or two here.

I’d rather say that the letter gets returned due to insufficient postage.

Well, If Brad losses his job, there is always Weenie World.
sunsohot over 12 years ago
Oh for heaven’s sake, they should have just let the letter go. Luann will either hear great news that her long distance relationship has potential (which means, perhaps, we will see what Quill is really doing in Australia) or she gets shut down, grieves and moves on with her teenage life.

“A mail carrier is another matter.”That’s what Logan Sackett and I were thinking yesterday. Don’t know whether Dirk’s past prevents him from holding that job.
Toronto2 over 12 years ago
The standard way out of this is for Luann to have used a normal stamp, and the USPS to return the letter for insufficient postage to Oz.
Or perhaps Toni will use that as an excuse to get the letter back right away, if the Mail Cop is gullible.
BillWa over 12 years ago
FBOFW did a bit like this, The postman says that mail sent through the system is like swallowing a quarter, you just have to waint until it reaches the other end.
lynnskay over 12 years ago
It is no more likely that Dirk could become a postal worker than a cop. The investigation of potential postal workers is at least as intense as the police department’s. At least it was back in the seventies when I became a mail carrier. It is not just junk mail that they handle. A lot of important stuff and money is sent through the mail. Back in my day, all the social security checks were handled by the post office, for example.
Chuck374 over 12 years ago
This whole arc is beyond stupid. Tell you what, Greg. Since you seem to be suffering from writers block, why don’t we bring back Dirk to break up the monotony? I kinda think there may be some unresolved feelings involving Nancy.
