The socialism or communism in Cuba has been corrupted into totalitarianism in the same way that republicans are currently corrupting democracy. Get rid of them both.
I have yet to meet the Republican who head a frigging clue what socialism is. AND if they think bringing in Cubans who are angry because the government isn’t doing its job in providing them food and medicine is better, good luck with that.
Socialism: the workers run the companies: farmer co-ops, mutual insurance companies, and even a local grocer here called Redner’s. What does that have to do with progressives?
Sounds like a plausible idea, I’m thinking 2 for 1. Two socialist wannabes for one Cuban freedom seeker. We could start with some of the wannabe commenters on your cartoon pages.
Cuba is a communist dictatorship. Be clear about that. What we don’t want here is a dictatorship where one man decides our policies. In the last election, the GOP did not present a platform, instead saying that they would follow whatever Trump said. That’s a dictatorship
Many Americans think socialism, communism, fascism are all the same thing, and lump them together. They call people communists one day, and socialists the next. When that fails, they call people liberals. Sheesch.
One of these days, republicans will understand what socialism is… as compared to communism. We need civics classes back in school curriculums.
In truth, with communism and socialism, where the distinction between a laboring class and owner class is dissolved, freedom and democracy can flourish; however, there would also be a massive redistribution of wealth. The vast majority of Americans would see an increase in their wealth, health, and well-being, but this also means that the wealthy property owners of today, with their billions of dollars of assets, would become mere millionaires…While these describe economic systems of production, the terms “socialism” and especially “communism” have been commandeered for political motives and attached to authoritarian government regimes that restrict personal freedom. – Investopedia
The “die hards” of socialism will never change. They will always believe that “real” socialism or communism has just not been tried yet and when “their generation” effects it it shall work and bring on a heaven on Earth. They never learn!
Vindictive Americans are at the root of Cuba’s problems. The concept of a nation so close to the motherland not wanting to be “America” is/was just too much to bear.
Using scary words like socialism, open borders, caravans, and Critical Race Theory is using the same old playbook. Pretty effective on people unable to think critically.
Better yet …. Can we exchange them with Americans yearning for Dictatorship?
Mikey the Right Wing Nut Job that he is ( on the payroll of the ghost of Republican gambling magnate Sheldon Adelson) Believes the quintessential aspect of the Cuban government is Socialism and that Denmark, Sweden and other successful socialist leaning nations don’t offer us any lessons.
The most important aspect of the Cuban government is Dictatorship like the kind of Government that Trump wanted to create by overthrowing the US constitution.
Cuba was for 60 years a "Cult of Personality dictatorship of Fidel Castro. The Republicans want to create a Cult of personality around a failed TV Star that has run his fathers billion dollar empire into bankruptcy.
Ramirez doesn’t know what socialism is, other than an epithet. Cuba isn’t socialist, it’s authoritarian, under the rule of one man, then his brother, than another chosen after he retired.
Growing up I had two friends that were Cuban refugees. They and their parents could tell some pretty awful stories about why they left. The other side of the coin is that they could tell some pretty awful stories about what it was like BEFORE Castro.
Batista was the US backed dictator of Cuba. He was brutal and corrupt. So corrupt that he was cutting deals with the US Mafia. All that repression and corruption was cool with the US as long as Cuba stayed anti-communist. The average Cuban was happy to see Batista go. And the poor felt they were better off with Castro – try as they might, the US could not get the Cubans to rise up against him.
The thread that runs through the Cuba story is this: the US is fine with repressive regimes as long as they are willing to play ball with us. Saudi Arabia can order journalist murdered, execute dissidents, repress women, etc, but they are on our side so we’re cool with that.
“progressives” are not “yearning for socialism”. Socialists are yearning for socialism. conservatives always try to confuse people with terms that sound right but are not. That’s being dishonest. It’s all conservatives got.
Just a thought; is that word bubble based on the plaque at the base of the Statue of Liberty with the words “…yearning to breathe free…”? I thought Q-publicans hated that because it was inviting refugees to come here.
“liberty” and “socialism” aren’t even on the same scale, they are two completely different concepts.
The opposite of liberty is a dictatorshipWhere as socialism is an economic model that compares to capitalism
Cubans and other “socialist” countries that Ramirez mocks are a problem because they are a dictatorship and lack democracy, not because they pretend to be socialist.
Countries that are fully democratic and have socialist policies are doing just fine.
The republicans don’t understand economic systems.Cuba is a totalitarian dictatorship. Not a socialist democracy. That is what they want for the United States, with them being overlords.that is why they fear the American Voter and will do anything to make it more difficult for anyone but rural white men to vote.
Insurrectionist republicans want to overthrow the legitimate government of the USA and put in the vicious lying covid spreading Putin loving orange dictator that the majority voted out.
Won’t work – conservatives would never want to admit brown-skinned people, especially if they are poor… they’d prefer to just kick all progressives out of “their” country…
And Republicans yearning for fascism … which is just as accurate as saying Democrats want socialism. It is so much easier to label Democrats dangerous socialists than actually come up with policies and proposals with an intent to do something about infrastructure, health care, climate change and other serious issues facing our country.
Just got a cancer diagnosis. With my crappy insurance only paying 70% I’m looking at $50,000 out of pocket expenses. Thank god I don’t live in one of those socialist hell holes.
Maybe we can take in all the refugees looking for safety and jobs and send all the lazy conservatives to Gitmo, where they can be taught what socialism, communism, and all the other isms they keep prattling on about actually mean. Sort of a education camp, as a reeducation camp would imply they had one in the first place.
I was living in Berkeley California, anyone who went to Cuba to help with the sugar cane harvest around 1970 came back home to Berkeley to find they had their own FBI agent assigned to them.
Bwahaha Berzerkeley, that says it all along with going to Cuba to harvest sugar cane. Say, why would a workers paradise need outside help for their harvest? Answer- they didn’t, that was just a glorified field trip for communist wannabes who did not at all live under same conditions or eat the same food as the Cuban slave laborers. Nah, they wined and dined with the overseers. Wonder if Bernie Sanders was a roommate. Brings to mind an acid tripping, pot head hippy who no doubt hopscotched from one failed commune to another. It does put in context all the antiAmerican, communist loving rhetoric along with the old USSR’s propaganda apparatchiks standard use of lies, disinformation and propaganda. Yeah, while I was training and working in the 70s with the USA’s intelligence services someone else was being groomed as an antiAmerican communist subversive. Learned the lessons well. Hahaha, the faux outrage and naivety of someone who realizes they’re on the FBI’s radar screen after attending a training and indoctrination vacation in communist Cuba.
Sigh, I have relatives in Cuba who are slowly starving and have limited access to health care. No Covid-19 vaccinations for them. We try to send them money, food, medicines etc, but it is too often intercepted and confiscated by Raul Castro’s thugs. I have first hand knowledge of the true conditions among the common people of Cuba. Meanwhile the Cuban communist party members live high on the hog while the elites enjoy a lifestyle equivalent to American billionaires.
Really? Go to Miami and ask a Cuban. While you’re at it, try selling him or her on the Marxist/Socialist dream the Bidocrats are moving us towards. However, be sure there are no potential seapons near at hand and practice social distancing.
