Since I started paying attention, I’ve actually found a number of things that are considerably cheaper at local stores than at Amazon. And it’s not like I have no time at all to shop.

My only association with Amazon comes by way of items purchased from third parties who use Amazon shipping. I’ve never known about it ahead of time. I don’t need instant gratification. There’s something delicious about waiting for things to arrive. I have an airplane kit coming in from Australia and no way to know when it’ll get here other than a broad statement of before mid-September.

If I need something I go to a local store. I’ll get it from Amazon if I can’t find it there, but they’re last.

I think it’s odd that when Walmart would move into an area people would protest that it was going to put smaller stores out of business. Amazon is putting everyone out of business—all the large stores, anyway—and no one is saying a word.

I would LOVE to purchase everything I need locally but usually that entails driving 15 miles to town, going to multiple stores and finding no one has it in stock, ordering it from the store, driving back home and then returning two days later to pick it up.

Bezos and the Waltons show themselves to be amoral greedballs by letting their businesses hurt small entrepreneurs so they can add a minuscule amount to their already obscene wealth. The Waltons are worse because they never worked a minute to get wealthy.

Have to be wise when shopping at Amazon! I never order unless I get enough items to qualify for free shipping and never pay for prime….ever! That’s probably why Bezos is so wealthy.

Mostly, I buy online if I can’t find something locally or if the price difference is large, like glasses. They are 1/10th the price online.

Individual choices do matter. By shopping Amazon you are empowering their world view of driving out local businesses, and enabling the way they treat their own people.

This is a stupid analogy. Lemonade wouldn’t be more convenient to buy from Amazon than from a lemonade stand. Amazon doesn’t have a market in convenience foods.

I don’t assume Amazon is cheaper. I go to Amazon to find things I don’t expect to be able to find easily locally. I also appreciate some of the heavier items being delivered to my door instead of me trying to figure out how to get it home.

But I also like to shop locally and in the small stores. I buy dog food from the local small business, for instance. I buy fresh foods from the local farms when I can. And if a kid is selling at a stand by the road I hope I have cash on me.

Each business has it’s place and we vote with our wallets what we want to see more of.

I shop Amazon all the time, but I do like to check the local stores first… if I’m there or nearby. Sometimes it’s just too easy to hit that BUY button and have it at my doorstep 1 or 2 days later. The problem with both is I go in for one item and come out with three or four. Oh yes, they have my number.

YouTube does too. Curses the friend who sends me a YouTube link… for there goes all productivity for the next 3 hours.

Every few years I see news items where some surly old curmudgeon calls the cops to ticket a kid for having a lemonade stand – no permit, too close to traffic, on & on, yadda, yadda, yadda. And, of course, some idiot writs up the kid. Then the Mayor and Chief of Police have to go on TV and make a big show of slapping the idiot on the hands. It’s an old meme, but it does happen…

Amazon doesn’t sell inexpensive goods, they sell convenient goods that are often inexpensive (and often cheap as well).

As I just told Amazon, I will never again purchase clothing items (including shoes) on line. I must try them on to see if they fit. That means in the future, “brick and mortar” stores with human contact.
