My father is nowhere near 75 in order to “enlist”; he’s got six years from this coming December.

75? Just the right age to enlist in the Colonial Defense Forces, and get a new, green but very healthy body.

(For those who don’t know, that’s a reference to John Scalzi’s excellent Old Man’s War.

If everyone died at 75, how many people would be left to read “Pickles”? (But at least we can count on another five years from Brian.)

From witnessing the quality of life in my own family’s elders, I’d be fine with being done at 80 (if I live that long)… my generation (late baby boomer) isn’t going to live as long as our parents anyway. (Mine were 87 and 89) About 1/3 of my friends are already gone and more of the rest of us are ill than not. I truly believe we will be the first generation to not live longer as a whole than our parents, because we were the first to be raised on poor quality fast food and processed food, surrounded by plastic that has now been banned.

Reminds me of a tale from childhood. In one tribe (don’t know what part of the world) the custom was to throw the elders off a cliff to their death when they reached a certain age. Then, before he reached that age, the ruling elder rescinded the custom.

Be patient. Just wait 10 or 20 years and we’ll all be gone. And then, who will you find to blame for society’s ills?

Sure we’re living longer. And damn right we’re an army of old people who are ( many of us anyway ), active, vibrant not going quietly into the darkness. If we are still working in our 70’s and 80’s, who’s fault is that? Far too many Seniors are forced to continue working because of economic circumstances and social situations.

I fail to see how a 70-year-old retiree who has to take a job as a greeter in Walmart or a bagger at Publix in order to supplement his or her meager Social Security pension is diminishing the opportunities for young people.

The billionaires aren’t taxed nearly enough to pay for them. Also for the 3rd straight year our general longevity is stalled. Expect it to get shorter as time goes on.

It would be interesting to find out the average age of Pickles commentators (and GoComics commentators in general). I’m guessing it skews in the 70’s, judging by the reminiscences. Also we retirees have spare time to read all these comments. I like it way better than Facebook, rarely look at that anymore. I am 65.

Seeing’s how the elderly in this country are keeping the drug companies fat & sassy that would seem to negate what that guy is going on about. Also, nobody cares about the elderly in this country anyway! I’m turning 69 in the fall so I guess I’m negated!
