My former girlfriend worked for an office-equipment vendor and one day came home shaking her head over a tech-support call that she’d had to scramble one of their service people to handle. She had taken the call and asked all the standard questions, “Is it turned on?” Yes. “Is it plugged in?” Yes, to a power strip. “Is the power strip plugged in?” Yes. “Are the lights on in the room?” Yes. (This latter question because the previous year they’d had to send a service tech to a place where the power was out to the whole building.) “OK, sounds like a problem with our equipment then.”

An hour later the service tech returned bearing the news that it really does work best if the power strip isn’t plugged into itself.
