The monthly newsletter for my condo recently reached 40 years. The masthead listed it as XXXX. Not exactly wrong, but more usually given as XL. I think I’ll include this cartoon with my note to the condo manager.
A man is attending the Super Bowl, when he notices an empty seat.Thinking this to be strange, the man asks the person sitting next to the empty seat if he knows who sits there. The guy replies: Well, I bought two tickets for my wife and I a long time ago, but she passed away. So the man asks: Couldn’t you have brought someone else?
The only thing I had to write 1000 times was “I will not talk in class.” Seriously !!!And during 4th grade Christmas break.I wasn’t talking…I mouthed out something.
That’s why education is important. You never know when you’ll need something you learned later in life. I’m not sure who decided SBs would use Roman Numerals but he must have been some nerd who loved Roman Numerals and figured he’d mess with all the jocks who would never understand the system.
I learned and still remember Roman numerals from school. We also learned to use an abacus. Since (Some? Most?) schools no longer teach cursive writing, I assume the Roman numerals and abacus went out the window too. I think they were good skills to learn, a different way to see things.
We also need to know Roman numerals in order to read in movie credits what year the movie was made. Usually that isn’t in view for very long so one must be quick.

What are they good IV?

I guess people think the Roman Numerals look more impressive. Like the copyright dates on vintage movies.

I’m still a little torqued that the NFL chickened out a few years ago and not called it “Super Bowl L”.

I didn’t remember D was 500, and had to Google it. He’s writing “711, 712, 713” in panel 4.

as I repeatedly told students, one never knows when a bit of learning is going to be relevant, but it nearly always is eventually.

I learned it because of movie dates. They’re always in Roman numerals in the credits. Why?

I have to wonder how many people have bought watches with Roman numerals, and had no concept as to how to read them.

Or just ignore it and go do something that is normally crowded while everybody else is home watching . . .

I found knowing them useful for reading the copyright date for movies during the credits as they are always written in Roman numerals.
