My wife for one will not allow any such devices near her. As for me I too am in Arlo’s class. I’m usually asked for answers to questions I really don’t remember.
Not only do your devices listen to you, but they connect with your spouse’s devices and you start getting ads for things they’re interested in. What is really nasty is if it’s getting around holiday time and they start shopping for your gift and you see what they’re shopping for. Then your gift isn’t a surprise.
It really does happen……the price we pay for this technology will have to be paid for at some point. Who can really be trusted these days? For example: Yesterday, I got a weird question from an employee of Spectrum who was following up on an order I placed for new service that morning. All legit….I’m sure, but why would Spectrum want to know what State my Social Security Card was issued from? And that would have been nearly 60 years ago.Go Figure????
That’s why I never connect anything but computers and sometimes phones to my wifi. There’s no reason at all for my TV set to connect to the internet when I have just a nice a screen on my home computer to watch anything streaming in full-screen mode. And I certainly don’t need my Netflix, etc redirected through the TV manufacturer’s server, which it has no (honorable) business doing in the first place.
If this is the following morning from yesterday’s arc, what is Janis doing awake, out of bed, and talking to Arlo so early in the morning? Arlo hasn’t had time to adjust his complaint dampeners to Janis’ prattle at this time of day. No wonder he looks dazed!
It’s not “just you”, Janis . All of our latest tech items have AI enhanced programming that not only listens to us but transmits what it hears back to where the item was made, for evaluation.
This strip gave me my first full-out laugh I’ve had in a while. As for the unavoidable surveillance; we live in a microwave oven with 2-way mirrored walls, but only advanced AI could do anything with the overwhelming mass of data, so keywords and less commonly location, are the tripwires. Getting enough power to run the current iteration of AI is getting more attention than electricity to underserved nation’s healthcare.
I ALWAYS turn off every “personalization” option. I have never seen how “targeted” advertising benefits me. It just makes me a target for ads designed to catch my eye. Random ads have no effect on me.
Funny thing: something similar happened to me. A coworker & I were talking about Frank Frazetta for a bit & after work I was checking Facebook only to find Frazetta ads all over it. I hadn’t looked anything up & it had been in my pocket the entire conversation. It was weird!

It’s a nuisance, for certain. Then, the phone questions you, “Are you SURE you want to delete?” Yes, I’m sure, you A.I. A-H – delete!

Stop complaining Janis. At best you allow the spying, at worst you enable and encourage it.

Facebook is the worst, I don’t use it. I get almost no ads, even though I buy auto parts and other stuff for the house all time on the internet.

Funny, I never have that problem. Feature phone, dumb TV, don’t even have a microphone or camera on my computer. 38 years in IT taught me to K.I.S.S.
