Please, you can’t reason with a 6 year old. You have to think of them as little cavemen. Talking is fine if it’s on their level and they will listen but sometimes a little pain works wonders too.

I think Puddles will be okay, more startled than anything. It was an aluminum can, not a bottle. When he realizes that he’s not hurt he will enjoy licking the roo’beer off of his fur.Shannon is a sociopath with no sense of empathy and no one can get through to teach her.Luann never really volunteered for this responsibility; it was shoved onto her at the last minute.Luann is going to lose her cool, and Shannon’s heinie is going to look like two Japanese flags.

Good call – that’s punishment enough (for Shannon and Luann). :)

The attention will shift to Puddles, caring for Puddles, an opportunity for Shannon to actually grow a little – she will apologize to Puddles, and who knows ? She may even apologize to Luann – - – or not : )

@mercedesYeah, blame the babysitter for trying to get the kid to mind. Shannon made bad choices by not doing what the adult asked and there should be consequences. But not with her pants down.

I agree with Night-Gaunt49, when a child is pretty much left to themselves they get used to doing what they want, BUT Luann needs to learn the first important lesson of parenthood and/or babysitting, PICK YOUR BATTLES. Sometimes it is easier to just sit down with them, because sooner or later they will get tired of you sitting there and go off to do something else. Or go in the kitchen and start something like baking cookies, even the ones from a roll, and they WILL come see what you are doing. The child is a NOT a brat, she is just a lonely little girl that wants attention, and bad behavior gets her that attention. I feel sorry for her.

Depending on how full that can was, Puddles may need to be rushed to an emergency vet. Can you imagine getting beaned on the head by a nearly full soda can! I dropped one on my foot once and thought I had broken it (my foot, not the can).

Spanking isn’t violent. I would much rather get my kid’s attention with a few whaps on the bottom than have her misbehave until she’s hurt or in prison someday. One day it’s throwing a can of root beer, years later it’s drugs and crime. Parents have to love their kids enough to discipline them. Sometimes “time out” is just time for them to tune out.

This is where you grab her by the back of the neck and march her down the street to Brad’s house, ring the bell and too bad if there’s a “sock on the doorknob” or the “house is rockin’”, you explain the situation and dump the brat.

A teenaged babysitter who is not related to the child does not do that unless they are stupid. If the kid is a brat, don’t you think the parent is the kind who will call the cops on you? And hitting someone else’s kid is against the law. If they want to do something about this girl, the thing to do is refuse to ever watch her again.

Kids like this need to spanked, and then they need to be shut in a quiet room in the dark, no phone, no tv, no computer. I didn’t have any of those things when I was a kid ANYWAY, so when I got spanked all I could do was sit down with my sore butt in the dark and remember why it was that happened in the first place, then I remembered to NEVER do that bad thing again!

Toni spends a lot of time with Shannon, but I’ve never seen Toni try to correct behavior. I think to try and make up for Dad’s neglect, Toni lets Shannon get away with a lot and that’s not a favor to a kid.

Time for a time out, I have dealt with kids like this, you have to take charge. It may take a little elbow grease, as you may have to wrestle them into the corner. But if you do not, they will continue to walk all over you.

Ouch. Poor puddles. I’d say now is the time for Luann to think like a grown up. Shannon wants tv, unplug it. She wants root beer, put them out of reach. When Shannon’s inevitable tantrum starts, ignore it. This is all about getting attention, so take it away until Shannon can earn the attention positively.

At last – Puddles gets his day in the sun!

Luann deserved it— she’s been acting on Shannon’s level for some time. She needs to take Babysitting 101 to learn how to gain the respect & obedience of children. (I agree with Dr. Rosenbaum, toddlers and those unable to reason can get a quick spank to gain their attention. After that, never use physical force.)

What happened to Quill? Is he still by his phone, waiting for an actual call?

Time outs do nothing for that kind of behavior. Luann needs to put that child over her knee and give her butt a good spanking, just like we used to get when we were kids and misbehaved! It won’t kill her, or scar her for life! Then, Luann needs to start teaching that child (since no one else is!) what proper behavior is! And yes, the child is in desperate need of proper adult attention, not just half-baked babysitting.

This little girl obviously is in need of love and discipline. Discipline is a form of instruction and not necessarily in the form of spanking. She needs someone with a firm attitude to help her understand that the way that she is acting is not going to benefit herself or help those around her to like her.

Nevertheless some kind of reward/punishment/toughlove thing is badly needed. Soon we’ll see what Toni’s emergency is…

Honestly the way this child behaves, if you guys remember way back if TJs boss at that restaurant and got bit by her just by seeing how she acted, i would have just said ow and still take the crown back because she is indeed a very nasty little brat who deserves a good smack on the butt OR a true time out. She has enough adult people her in life to set her straight. Time to take the bull by the horns everyone and show little Shannon what happens to spoiled little nasty brats. Sorry I work in retail and I see this ALL the time so even in a cartoon it makes my blood boil to see children so young behave so disrespectfully.

True confession – I read a page or two of comments, but not all. However, I’d like to put my two cents’ worth in. (I do realize this is a comic strip, but similar scenes are often played out in real life.) We knew a couple of married couples, community-college teachers, who each adopted a little girl to round out their families. (One family already had two boys, the other two boys and a girl.) The newborn daughter of Family #1 turned out to have bipolar disorder; the other, who was also a baby when adopted, had severe behavior problems and wound up in an institution. Both are in their forties now, and have improved. The other children turned out fine, with no significant problems. No amont of beatings or otherwise inflicted pain could have straightened out these girls. As far as we could see, both families loved their adopted girls and tried to treat them the same as their other kids. (We also know kids who were adopted and turned out fine.) There are too many variables involved to make a dogmatic comment without being intimately involved with the situation.
