I, for a change, disagree that Luann is overall snippy? If someone important to me is telling me something important to them, I give them my full attention and don’t wander off to some random SMS. That can definitely wait! Quill is being very dismissive to Luann.

It is extremely rude to tell a person who is there to see you in person that they have to wait while you answer a phone call. That’s why call waiting was invented.

If the circumstances were reversed, and it was Luann who was taking the call, you would never think of chastising Quill.

Is this the first indication we’ve seen that Pru has a lingering presence in Quill’s life after the one-week seminar in New York? And even if so, we don’t know that Pru and Quill are, or ever were, “an item”. She could be old, married or gay, as Comicboys said.

(Although I have the distinct impression that Team Evans ain’t exactly up there with Lynn Johnston where gay characters are concerned. They live in Georgia, don’t they? I’d be worried about getting my house burnt down!)

I do think Quill was rude to take the call, but unless he abruptly excuses himself to continue the conversation where Luann can’t hear, I wouldn’t get too wound up about it.

Of course, if his next move is to walk away from Luann, then she should seriously consider doing some walking herself.

Will be interesting to see what Pru looks like. I bet very flashy good looking – Luann will be devastated.

If Pru just got a message intended for Luann, she may have some hot ideas about her chances with Quill..Meanwhile Luann remains resolved not to be jealous. .She may lose it in the next strip..Whether it will be a simple misunderstanding or a real relational shift remains to be seen. .Miss Evans has thus far wanted to keep Quill as her male ideal. She rescued him from the Australian volcano where Greg had intended to dump him.

I don’t know any people this age who actually TALK on the phone to each other. If she is just texting he can quickly glance at it to see if it needs to be dealt with now or can wait.

7I am fairly surprised that Luann’s reaction to Quill is so mild/tepid. I anticipated that when Quill started to text “Pru” that Luann would have gotten EXTREMELY upset. The mildness of her annoyance is surprisingly mature and unexpected. Now, what does her response mean? Potiential meanings include:1. Luann is actually maturing some in regards to “boyfriends”.2. Luann is perhaps “not as into” Quill as she used to be.3. Luann is just starting to get upset and she will get more demonstrative of her anger.4. Wedding “hoopla” makes Luann so “swoony and giddy” that nothing would make her get really riled up.Now, about Quill:1. I predict Quill will stay bland.2. If Luann does get more upset, I anticipate that Quill will apologize significantly.3. Even though I think it would be interesting for Quill to leave Pitt and Moony… and for Luann to meet another potential “suitor”… I suspect Quill is here to stay.4. I am interested in who “Pru” is, and if we will ever get to meet her in the comic? I suspect she is not any sort of potential love interest for Quill, though I can hope so.

One final thought….. in my classroom I see so much phone nonsense…. it is really something that takes over the lives of a lot of my students. I have made a rule in my classes that no cell phone use is allowed and that cell phones need to be put on airplane mode during class. I get a handful of students each semester who come up to me saying it is “too difficult” to be without their phone. So, another idea is that Luann is only mildly frustrated BECAUSE unfortunately for the younger folks, phone conversations often time DO take precedence over real converstation. An annoying as hell concept, yes, but also one that I think may be true.

I wonder f we will ever get to see Prudence, or if she will just be this forever invisible force that comes between Luann and Quill testing the strength of their relationship.

And she could turn out to be an agent, finding roles for Quill.

I don’t try to out guess Greg, but there’s a curve ball coming here. I would really like to see a crash of bodies with Luann and Gunther as they nurse their rejections.

Good observation… maybe Luann (one day) will see that pic. sparks will fly then.

Late comment, but lets see what happens here with Dear Prudence. Those of us Luann “devotees” do not want to see our character hurt again in love, but maybe that is not what is happening. Certainly a tease though. I will reserve comment or opinion on the direction of this arc for now.

Greg gave the title of his blog on the “Cartoonists’ Blog” site “Luannalyzers”. I do believe it was in “tongue in cheek” reference to what we do so well…..

Thanks, gromit82. I’ve no idea where I got the idea he lived in Georgia. And OK, I can see the economic reason he’d be leery of taking that step, but my comment still stands: I don’t see Team Evans as prepared to introduce a gay character, even as a peripheral plot element like Principal Chin, or Tio Leo.

We’re free to speculate, but some things are not going to happen in the actual strip.
