And the huge fight has begun

Well, it seems Luann has a chip on her shoulder- the “Salt and Vinegar” kind.. – And Quill seems to be having some beef….probably hasn’t marinated for long, but, seems like it’ll most likely be sour…and steaming, for a while…

Wow! I think Pru needs to rent elsewhere. LOL

Well, this will either resolve their differences and finally start building their relationship … or it will break them apart and Quill can move to NYC or go back to Oz or wherever.

Whoops, I smell a breakup. Then again, the writing has been on the wall for at least a couple of months. They have much less in common than they used to.

If Luann is having a tiff… does that mean that when Tiffany’s angry, she has a Luann?

Quill has been taking Luann for granted, assuming that she will wrap her life and plans around his ideas instead of talking with her to plan things together. There is no future for them without his revisiting the respect he gave her in the past.

Quill should just dump her. She’s alway going to be suspicious & jealous. Dump her now.

I’ve seen this play out in real life among adults much older. Everyone keeps saying Luann is immature but so is Quill. He is not protective of the emotional side of their relationship. He has developed an emotional relationship with another woman that has crossed boundaries. Often other people can see it and wonder who his girlfriend really is. My friends were dating but the male had all these other ‘just friends’ that he was emotional and affectionate with. The one ‘just friend’ who was a true friend of the female (i.e., Luann) was able to see what was going on and backed away from the friendship with the male (Quill) to protect her friend (Luann). The other female (Pru) enjoyed the relationship and attention from the male (Quill) more than she cared about her friendship with the female (Luann) and continued to engage in the emotional relationship. The woman in the dating relationship endured this ‘just friend’ relationship (there were more to come) for several years before wising up and dumping the guy. A few months later she met a nice guy who treated her like a queen and they have been happily married for ten years. Obviously Quill doesn’t realize what he is doing and Pru is more attached to Quill than to Luann. Luann is right to feel insecure in this triangle. Quill lacks the maturity to see what he is doing and if this was real life, I don’t think the relationship would survive unless Luann was willing to play second fiddle. We didn’t even see Luann and Quill have any alone time together during Christmas which is very unusual. I realize Gregg cannot show every conversation but I think it is pivotal that any interaction was omitted.

Already, I’m thinking up of a soundtrack to go along with this fight. One suggestion for it:“All Around the World” by Lisa StansfieldAnd “Bluer Than Blue” by Michael Johnson (if Luann and Quill break up)

I don’t think that Quill would not use the word “pissy” since that means that a person is inebriated i.e. “drunk” in ’Straya.

The problem is, over time, an argument can start to be less about the facts/opinions…. and more about just the feeling of being mad…

I was hoping Quill and Luann would work out for at least a bit longer, but… I admire Luann for not hanging on just for the sake of continuing the relationship. Quill has abandoned her, emotionally He hasn’t given her any reason to try make things work.

Is it too late to drag Aaron Hill kicking and screaming into this? Just a thought… :)

Luann has been *itchy for a good while. It’s about time Quill stands up to her. She obsessed over Aaron Hill for ages, flirted with Gunther, and now can’t be happy with Quill. Run Quill, and don’t look back.

Mars vs Venus. Logic vs Emotion. Problem is when the man refuses to deal with emotional blackmail. Man wsnts to fix, women want to stew and pout because they want to maintain upper hand. Luann wants Quill to seek her approval and forgiveness. Quill wants to address head on. Everything means unfixable.

I wonder if Pru is that naive to think that there’s nothing going on between Luann and Quill. Perhaps Luann could show Pru that Quill is taken by being more affectionate/intimate in front of her? …just saying…

Yuck. A decent guy doesn’t call his girlfriend “pissy”.

Ug. I really hope they break up. Luann is wrong to not want to talk about her frustrations when Quill asks directly. And Quill is wrong to not care about Luann’s emotional reactions. I wish Luann had insisted on staying to help clean at the end of the Fuse opening. That was the type to put on your best syrupy voice and say “Oh Pru! I just COULDN’T leave you and Quill to clean up by yourself. Besides, it will be fun to work with my boyfriend and new friend!” and. not. budge. an. inch.*The problem with comic strips is, due to the limited format, the artist only shows scenes that move the plot or get a laugh. Therefore the only Luann/Quill scenes we see is when there is tension between them. Therefore, I am unimpressed with the quality of their connection and I don’t see how EITHER of them is enjoying this relationship.*What I would wish is that Luann move out and share a tiny apartment with a friend and balance working full time with community college. It would hurt when she visits home and Pru is there, and Quill is visiting her in her room, alone. She could establish some independence, though. And if Pru is moving in for good (isn’t she a student? what about next semester?) it will be make the break up with Quill easier.

Here’s a personal experience I had: when I was dating this guy (“Jay”) long distance, he had a female study partner (“Kay”). From the way he described her, I had a feeling she was attracted to him and he found her an intriguing person. However, I really didn’t think he would ever cheat on me. I was a little jealous, but didn’t make a big deal out of it. About a year later he and I broke up. Six months later Jay and Kay were dating. It actually made me feel better to know 1) My instincts were correct and there WAS an attraction between them and 2) My instincts were correct and Jay was NOT cheating on me. Let’s face it — if he were cheating on me, they would have started dating DAYS or WEEKS later, not months.*Trust your instincts, Luann, but analyze your feelings. Are you worried that Pru is attracted to Quill? Or that Quill is attracted to Pru? Those are two separate issues. Or are you and Quill just not happy together anymore?

Luann needs to back off, if you can’t trust your partner then the relationship is not worth it.

Oh boy! After what Quill just said, this strip has now become questionable with me!

Actually, Luann is just a pain in the ass.

This is where girls fail. They don’t want to talk about it. Guys are not mind readers. If a girl doesn’t want to talk about something that’s bugging her, she had better be prepared to put up with it for the rest of her life.

This conversation is “boiling” over. I hope it will end on a positive note. Quill is getting first hand on how a woman’s mind works. Sometimes, we can not understand it but wait patiently until she wants to talk.

If Quill doesn’t want a girlfriend who’s so insecure she doesn’t believe her boyfriend, then he’s better off without her. And if Luann is so immature that she’s always threatened by some other girl and then plays the “I don’t want to talk about it” card, she doesn’t deserve a good looking boyfriend.

Luann is being so hateful, Pru should rub it in her face.

The fact that the “Obvious” is not obvious to Quill may well be a big part of the problem, but being unwilling to discuss it is never part of the solution.

I’d stopped noticing that Luann isn’t wearing her boomerang pendant. How long has she not been wearing it? I wonder if Quill has noticed.

How is it obvious? Quill has been hanging around Pru and helping her parents. So how can Quill know that Luann is upset about something? Luann could’ve joined them in helping with the added bonus of keeping an eye on Pru.

Beginning of the end?

“Everything,” Luann? What the heck does that mean? It means “nothing.” If you cannot or will not express what is ticking you off, you can’t blame the other guy (in this case, Quill) for feeling frustrated (since he doesn’t know what your problem is) and finally reaching the limits of his tolerance and showing some anger of his own.This could mean a break-up, which might be useful for future variety of plot-lines, or it could climax in a big, emotional reconciliation, advancing one particular plot-direction. Either way, 2016 will be very different in Pitts!

Looks like Luann needs to talk this out with someone.

I don’t think Pru is even the issue, however awkward for her to live with the DeGroots it might be. Forget the Mars-Venus rant of some commenters.

Luann needs to articulate what needs are not being met in this relationship. She needs to feel special and desired. Quill needs to realize that he wants a friend and occasional make out partner, and that he is too absorbed in his theater passion now to share Luann’s vision for them.

So, this is the fireworks for new year’s eve! Tomorrow we start a new year will Luann & Quill start anew or find new paths? “Let old aquaintances be forgot”, time for out with the old & in with the new! Hmm, maybe Luann & Piro.

Some have suggested other boyfriends for Luann, but all of the possibilities seem as self-absorbed as Quill.

The readers voted that Luann and Quill would get married, have a urban home, have two children and a dog and that Luann will be a teacher. If that is the way this story is going, Quill will never be gone for too long.

Quill’s response was sadly too predictable. Reminds me of a lot of tv shows and movies where the protagonist says one thing which is immediately incriminating, when all he or she has to do is convey complete information.

I bet the two break up and Luann ends up competing with Tiff for Gunther.

7I can understand Quill calling Luann “pissy” because she is coming across as being rather overboard here. It is as if she is spewing her rage and anger out at Quill. That said, it is really unfortunate for Quill that he used the word “pissy” as it will not help in any way to get Luann to calm down. In fact, the use of the word will likely only make Luann grow even more irate. The reality as I see it is…. Quill and Pru are doing a helluva lot of free work for the DeGroot family. There is no current evidence that Quill has done anything except work on Fuse business with Pru. Luann’s distrust has been brewing for a long time, but she NEVER took even one try at TALKING with either Quill or Pru about her feelings….. until NOW when she explodes in rage. Luann’s nasty outburst here, IMO, is adequate reason enough for Quill to become upset…. expecially after all the work and effort he has done to help Luann and her family. Unfortunately for Quill, however, his upset-ness will only add fuel to Luann’s raging fire of anger. For me, since I find Quill rather bland, and the Quill/Luann couple very dull….. I HOPE that they do break up over this! But, I doubt it will happen. Quill will eventually quell Luann’s rage, anger, fears, and worries…. and then we will be back with bland Quill and Luann as a couple forever.

Just putting my two cents in. First thing I am glad Luann put that nail gun down. Pulling the trigger by accident could have serious consequences (she would never do it intentionally, she is not that kind of person). I have expressed her frustration that basically he is not doing anything to nurture the relationship, not being aware of her feelings, and trying to make sure even if he was busy with her career, and his needs and wants, he lets Luann know he is concerned with hers, and their needs as a couple. I am fully aware that Luann can seem needy, but she is a bit insecure, and on the other side of the coin, she is a warm, loving, loyal, happy person generally. If we knew a person like her in real life most of us, other than the trolls among us, would consider her a nice, friendly, energetic (even Donald Trump would like her energy (lol)) young woman. She has been understanding about his trip to New York, although apprehensive, and his total unawareness of how she might feel with the other woman seeming to be such a focus of his life, in something he loves as much, maybe more than he does Luann, would of course make her feel even more insecure, and based on what we have seen in the strip so far with the Fuse, his return, and Pru generally he does not seem to recognize that, and appears to be the angry one. Luann is a bit guilty in the sense she should have said something sooner, but that is not her personality. A really aware and loving boyfriend should have his antennae out; I think this is a reason why some couples who are busy and separate because of career choices do well, and others don’t, basically they don’t know going in what the deal would be, and once it becomes clear either they learn to deal with it or they don’t.

They break up, Quill goes to New York, Luann begins to see Gunther with new eyes, and she and Tiffany are once again rivals for the affections of the same man. Everything old is new again.

Well said, but without Quill’s obtuseness and Luann’s personality and character, there would be no need for this arc. Dramatic action, you know.

Luann is fulfilling her own prophecy of a problem with her and Quill by a) being jealous for no actual cause, b) letting it simmer and now c) blowing up at Quill who has not actually done anything wrong, thereby creating result X – big fight and possible breakup which could easily lead to an actual Quill-Dru pairing where none existed before. Score one for irrational behavior.

That is not to say that screw ups do not happen at times in good relationships, but they get discussed and quickly worked out. People learn. Quill met Prudence during the internship he had in New York. That was a short time ago.

Luann’s concerns were further stirred up because she had originally consulted Dez about whether she should go to New York with Quill or take the job she had been offered, and Dez mentioned that ‘prudence’ was involved.

So when Quill communicated with her during that internship and first mentioned ‘Prudence’, Luann panicked and begged Bernice to come talk to her. And she started to tell Bernice about her concerns, and Bernice, of course, belittled her.

Except for her brief, despairing outcry to her mother when Prudence pushed her out of the door of the Fuse and told her to go home with her parents (thus leaving Quill and Prudence alone), Luann has kept her feelings bottled up.

Since her parents approved the idea of Prudence continuing to stay, Luann obviously didn’t even feel comfortable talking to her own parents about her fears. Probably because Prudence was at the family ‘pow wow’. And then Quill didn’t even join Luann and her family at Christmas, which he apparently did the year before.

Luann feels like she is being pushed out of her own life by Prudence. She has a right to be concerned. If Quill doesn’t have enough empathy to imagine how all this might feel to someone he supposedly cares about, he isn’t the right guy for her…

In case it is unclear, i am NOT saying that Luann does not have things to learn. She does, and certainly her display is not flattering, but for months Quill has expected her to give and give, and to shape her life around his. He has treated it as an expectation without appreciation for how it feels. She has given and given to the point where she is ready to explode. If he pushes back then she will. If he realizes how much she has given he will find it in himself to thank her and grow.Pru is another matter. I think she has sort of a chronic cheerleader syndrome, where she feels that she HAS to appear constantly cheerful because she is afraid of rejection if she permits herself to be more multidimensional. Many people automatically give in to applications of that approach but it is unhealthy, unhealthy for Pru, unhealthy for her relationships since eventually something has to give, unhealthy for the relationships of people with whom she interacts since she can become a wedge. Yes, i feel sorry for her at the same time as seeing her use that for manipulation. In her eyes Luann may appear to have a nearly perfect life with her family even more than her boyfriend.

Bryan, you have a point about Luanne not talking w Quill, BUT he should know because he is “living” in the situation. If he thinks about what is happening he will realize that he has been expecting Luann to just wrap herself around his life. Being IN the situation, his failure to examine the dangers and pain of such expectations is a distinct shortfall on his part which could have been avoided if he just took time to be appreciative of what he had, and to think about the efforts which have earned that appreciation.

Quill Quill Quill … you just do not get women. Pull her in your arms, look in her eyes, tell her she’s the only women for you and then kiss her!!

I really enjoyed the high school Luann, friends and family. I would have been happy if they had emulated other strips and stayed in high school forever. This storyline about college and growing up is just not enjoyable any more! The recent language used is totally unnecessary and disappointing. I’ll stick around for a little while, hoping things will change and if they don’t, will probably leave.

Thanks to Greg Evans for many years of good, wholesome humor. Here’s hoping he can sort out this mess and drop this storyline for good. AND eliminate Pru, the other college folks! Please go back to the more interesting era.

I’ve been reading the Classic version of Luann and can’t help but compare the freshness and amusing situations against the current tacky strip.

This is the first time I have ever seen a comic strip use the word “pissy.” I approve. The term has become part of popular usage and makes written dialogue seem more naturalistic; I hope no puritans complain.

Counting one’s blessings and giving thank yous for kindnesses is an important part of marriage, on the part of both participants. Learning that skill is a portion of what one learns when dating. those things shoukd happen pretty much daily or close to that. Months apart is no good; that makes relationships very unequal.

One final point: i think Quill is also now in a phase of life where his career is of greatest importance to him, and any girlfriend is more of a convenience as long as the two do not conflict. Luann may be in that situation herself once she takes classes that absorb and spark her. I hope she does find work that elicits passion in her. For Quill Luann now appears to be a distinct second after his work; she remembers being first and would like to have that again.Until i began reading comments in comics on and off as real life permits i never realized that the comics and comments can be an educational vector.

That has come up several times, if you go back and read the comments from the first day she appeared in the strip.

He may not be physically cheating with Prudence, but there is such a thing as emotional cheating. If he is indeed not cheating with Prudence yet—physically or emotionally—he may well be on his way there.

I see Pru completely differently. She’s not enthusiastic; she’s selfish and conniving. She couldn’t give a fig for romance or its sleazier counterpart with Quill. She’s manipulating both him and the others because it gives her a feeling of power. Maybe she also thinks it will advance her climb to greater celebrity and power..Quill probably isn’t the only “friend” she picked up in NYC, but when he told her about The Fuse, she saw an opportunity. She’s gonna take it over (at least that’s her plan) and claim all credit, though if anything goes wrong she’ll be gone like smoke in a whirlwind. She hasn’t asked if anyone wanted her “help”; she’s just barged in and taken control. And she’s imposing herself on the DeGroots as a “tenant” so that she can be in a position to exercise closer control almost 24/7 instead of just when they all happen to be together at The Fuse..I don’t think she’s ever made any “inappropriate” moves on Quill, which helps explain why he’s oblivious to Luann’s worries that she has. But she manipulates situations to feed Luann’s anxieties, so that Luann doesn’t catch on to what she’s really doing. And so that the tension between Luann and Quill keeps him from catching on. And yes, they’re both being oblivious to what some of us consider to be obvious, but the division among the commenters about who’s right and who’s wrong shows it’s not just “immaturity”. They’re both wrong, but if they weren’t being manipulated, they might be able to work that out..Luann’s parents, at least, seem to be uncomfortable with what’s happening, though they don’t yet seem to have figured out why… that what they worked so hard to build as their show has now somehow become her show.

Takes me back 30 years when I was in a similar relationship. I had completely forgotten about her until this strip dredged up the memory. Point being: This being their first serious relationship, it has a high probability of failing, and will be forgotten in decades to come. But it’s part of the maturing process.

unfortunately what’s obvious to Luann is not obvious to Quill. But Quill too is making almost no effort to let Luann feel included in his life. Apparently you now longer need to be deported overseas to vanish from Luann. Delta vanished by going to Washington D.C., so presumably Quill could disappear by going to NYC. Characters like Leslie Knox, Dirk, and mini-Elvis still live in Pitt, apparently, but they are allowed out of their basements only between 2:13 and 2:14 A.M. I have no idea where Mr. Fogarty went, but I hope he stays there.

Women are often safer showing emotions, but not always. In some businesses, in politics, and in some other platforms women are judged as being more emotional for displays similar to those from men. That said, i have found that if men are in a position where they are safe showing emotions that they have consistently been able to do so with me. Perhaps part of the reason for that is that decades ago in a charity for which i volunteered used to help vets who had been through very rough things. The experience taught everyone a lot about being less hampered by gender roles, including me since i had strength and a lot of patience to learn.My experience is that such differences are far greater among individuals than they are between genders.

Gunther has been infatuated with Luann since prepubescence. I wouldn’t be surprised to see those two end up together.

Luann and Quill are about the same age i was when i donated the time helping some vets. Frustration and lack of patience were two big triggers for me till i absolutely HAD to learn how to deal better with those short fuses. When i had to learn i did, right at their general age. It strikes me that i would like to see Luann volunteer to help people of her own general age who are readjusting to life after great hardships. The core of her character’s personality is such that i think she would grow in her own ways by doing so, and much that seems big to her now including the ways that she and Quill are growing apart, would after a while shrink in importance by comparison. Of course, i may be reading into her character, but this seems a way to also remind readers of good people out there who deserve to be respected, remembered, accepted, and included.

What ever happened to Luann’s geriatric lesbian mentor? She could use some advice now.

I remember, too, scratching my head at “I’mNotJayBlue”. I mean, How crazy was that ? – And too, I’m reminded about “Daue” It’s kinda “ko- winky- dental” that those two “generic IDs” were just “minor changes”, (with a replacement of a word or letter’s difference), and I remember for Daue, the poster identifying theriselves as such, said it was generally to “teach someone a lesson about perceived harrassment” (a supposed tit for tat, maybe?) and also coupled with this, the period of time with stolen avatars and such.

Sheila, if Luann’s character winds up as fortunate in marriage as i have been she will not need to explain the obvious to a man any more often than the rare times that he will need to explain the obvious to her. Gender is not destiny. Neither are gender stereotypes, but the stereotypes can impose unneccesary limitations when embraced too tightly, including ones in communication. Then again, i got really, really lucky in the man i wound up with. We have a modest life together but it is so loving, with good communication most of the time — a reality that stands in stark contrast to what some of both gender have here deemed possible.Happy New Year, and may the limitations others expect of you all wither and blow away. May your lives have enough adventures to make you proud of yourselves. May you tackle enough hard things that you continue to learn while letting yourselves accept the mistakes that inevitably come from living on the edge. May you realize who matters in your lives vs. who is peripheral enough to ignore. May you embrace questions but never hold a hypothesis too tightly. May you think each day about what is good in your lives.

NightG, there are structural and wiring differencs across the world, regardless of the culture. They are noticable in the first year of life. They show up on PET scans. It is silly to think the differences are caused by “SOCIETY” because society does raise children, parents do ~ or don’t, parents vary greatly.
