Non Sequitur by Wiley Miller for March 18, 2016
Transcript:
Jeffrey: Ok, first of all, vampire slugs don't exist... Danae: Yeah, but we've gotta prove it to Lucy. Jeffrey: Well, if I tried doing that, it would only serve to validate vampire slugs might exist and just keep this irrational fear alive. Danae: Ah...ok, I see. Lucy: Uh...see what? Danae: That he's afraid to look under there, too. Jeffrey: NO! Well..yes, but for something real.

Irrational fear is the best kind.

But there could be spiders, bats and even a homeless encampment under there, just like there used to be under the overpasses going over Cherry Creek and the Cherry Creek Bike Path in downtown Denver back when I was in High School.

First rule of conspiracy theory:Everything can be interpreted as a confirmation of conspiracy theory. (It’s a hole with no bottom.) Even if there’s evidence that the conspiracy theory is completely wrong, it just gives you a reason to extend the conspiracy to include the source of the “evidence”.

The beauty of Non Sequitur is that it can be enjoyed at two levels. The first level is the pre-coffee level where only the simplest of concepts can be understood. The second level is the post-second-cup-of-coffee level which involves many hours on Wikipedia trying to compensate for the consequences of a squandered youth.

Ah yes, now comes the great bridge inspection. Excitement. Will Jeffrey find somethun? Or will Lucy’s fears be wiped out? Some suspense; what is lurking under them boards? Will he get mud on his shoes? Can Danae now cross? Or will she be cross? Dis neighbor has important activity; better than whenever it is going on out there in media land.

Actually, I think a vampire slug is a pretty good description of a leech.

Leeches are real.

Some how I don’t think Jeffery’s worried about finding God under the bridge. Rational fear, perhaps drowning? If there has been a heavy rain recently, flash flood? He’s a boy, so maybe zombies or aliens? :P Confused, tune in tomorrow…..

Second rule of conspiracy theory: see the first rule. (It’s a reference to Fight Club, dude.)And the words “conspiracy theory” together have a recognized definition, although the definition does say “Not to be confused with a scientific theory” and “theory pre-formed conclusion”.

I’m sure there is a cult somewhere that believe vampire slugs are sacred, like cows in India…..I’m sure they are called by their Deity to feed the slugs daily…..Seriously, it wouldn’t surprise me a bit…Anyway, see you guys at the Slug-Fest…Hope it’s peaceful this year…..

First of all, there is no comic strip or comic strip character that didn’t have a portion of the readership hate it, for whatever reason. That is precisely why there’s a variety of comics on a comics page. You simply can’t please everyone, and to even try is a fool’s errand. Otherwise, you’d only need one comic strip in a newspaper. You have taken a dislike to Danae for whatever reason, and I accept that. Such is the nature of this business and art in general.
But I should point out to you that even if just a quarter of my readership felt the same way you do about Danae, I would have dropped her long ago. But that is not the case…not even close. The most response I get from readers is when Danae has been absent for more than a couple of weeks. I do hear from readers who tell me they skip the strip whenever they see her reappear, but they, like you, are very rare. So there is a very good reason Danae continues to appear on a regular basis…the majority of my readers demand it. I hope this clears things up for you. It would also help if you’d inform me on just what you do like.
Be well.

Actually they do exist. They are known more commonly by the name Leeches. The bane of my tour of duty in Columbia.

Yes, I figured it was probably falling on deaf ears, but I also thought it was something that should be addressed.
