Luann by Greg Evans and Karen Evans for April 29, 2016

Luann: The best thing about the New York trip? I did so many things on my own! I booked a flight, a hotel, got a cab, rode the subway.... Luann: Navigated the city, ordered korean food-even went clubbing! I've never felt so grown up! Luann: I've really matured, Pru. Pru: You have. Refill on your shirley temple?

She didn’t really mature, she was just lucky. At least 2 people, TEMPLO and Brdshtt, called ityesterday on the Shirley Temple. Why was that drink named after her? Now back to Gunth & Tiff.

Boy, was I right yesterday about the Shirley Temple.

Getting a cab, in NYC, is a sign of maturity. Okay…

Does Pru not know Luann is under 21? First she sends her to a club and now mocks her for drinking the Shirley Temple.

In this strip, no one under 21 can drink (except by accident, and then only in a foreign country where the drinking age is 18 anyway!). The only way they are allowed to get intoxicated is by eating Des’s brownies and imagining that they’re high. Imaginary illegal highs are totally allowed!

Pru is not a good influence.

It would appear that Pru is a good listener. Score one for the lady who could use a better hair stylist.

Where I come from, you can’t sit at a bar unless you’re 21. I played in a band at a club from age 18-20, and we were only able to do it because they also served food. And we had to stay at least six feet from the bar.

OK, I know this is just a comic strip, and I’m very fond of it… But what’s the big deal? Luann is 18 or so, for heaven’s sake! She’s never done things like get a train or whatever without parental supervision? By the time I was 14 I was regularly wandering around London (UK) on my own – including the original and un-cleaned-up Soho – and my husband travelled about Europe on his own at the same age. Still, hooray for Luann for finally managing a few things herself, even if the whole trip was actually organised by someone else.

@QueenofAmerica and @pointspread:Guess I’ll have to post the same post I made yesterday (slightly edited for more clarity):I think you guys are missing the point. The whole point of Club Foote was to give them something exciting to take home with them. Didn’t matter at all that it was short-lived, nor did it matter that the place serves alcohol and they couldn’t partake. It was just the idea of giving them the thrill of getting to see the inside of an exclusive place that few get a chance to see, where celebs hang out. That was the thrill that Pru was going for, and it paid off in spades. They had a blast. There’s no incongruity or inconsistency or mocking or anything like that here. Club Foote and this are two separate subjects altogether.

What I liked most about the NYC strips was the artwork. I was hoping it would last a while longer and we could see some other scenes, maybe Central Park. Good job Mr Evans!

Drinking age should be 18. If we send them to get shot in Iraq, they should be considered old enough to drink.

I didn’t see what Pru said as mocking Luann at all. I’m 58 and I still enjoy a Shirley Temple. Hubby and I are not much on drinking alcohol. Maybe split a pina colada on our anniversary, and at Christmas, and that’s about it.

remember that some poster’s comments reflect more their own life interactions than those of the strip’s characters.

It is possible to be 20 and never take a subway or ride in a cab. My town has no public transportation, and what passes for taxi service is basically there to ferry drunks home. There are people here who have never been more than 90 miles from home (nearest big city) so they have not booked a flight. So, none of the things she is excited for having done are necessarily routine for everyone.

Im not sure what is up with pru mocking luann in todays strip. :(

For those who don’t know about the Shirley Temple, she was a child actress (later a US ambassador) who set trends in hair and fashion for children for years. Some of the better-known movies include “Heidi”, “Captain January”, “Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm”. She danced with all the great classic tap artists including Bill “Mr. Bojangles” Robinson and Buddy Ebson. Contract issues kept her from the lead role in “The Wizard of Oz”. The drink bearing her name was ginger ale with a dash of grenadine, garnished with a cherry, and served in an up-glass (standard martini glass). More of publicity stunt to show the “sophistication” of the Hollywood actress, the non-alcoholic drink became a standard of many restaurants and clubs.

Remember yesterday’s strip? Pru was the one to put the kibosh on Lu’s interest in the bar. I’m betting she chose LuAnn’s drink.

Suburban kids. Everyone takes them everywhere and does everything for them. I grew up in Chicago, took the bus to shopping areas, rode my bike a couple miles to the park, ran errands in the neighborhood for Mom, and it all started when I was about 10 years old. I went alone to doctor and dentist appointments and visited museums and tourist sites downtown when I was in high school. Moms never picked up kids at school. They didn’t have their own car and many, like mine, didn’t even know how to drive. On rainy days you could see the mothers with umbrellas waiting outside the elementary schools to walk home with their children.
So today a college age girl is bragging about taking a subway and hailing a cab. I noticed Mom and Dad picked up Luann and Bernie at the airport. No bus out to suburbia? And life goes on.

This list of “accomplishments” would have made a lot more sense back when Luann was a high school freshman than it does now, when she is in her second year of college.

Despite the very gentle ribbing of his title character that Greg (not Pru) has done here , Luann and her friends really are maturing! And Pru is like a great “big sister” that is helping that along. It’s nice to watch the progression.
JanLC over 8 years ago
Maturity and not drinking alcohol at age 18 have nothing to do with each other. Pru isn’t mocking Luann, she’s agreeing with her.
Sisyphos over 8 years ago
In The Fuse, in the korner kalled Klub Kablooie, Lu kanoodles with Pru the bartender, prudently avoiding alcohol. And, like any good bartender, Pru diplomatically lets Luann unload on her near-giddy glorying in her Conquest of New York City (largely stage-managed by Pru through her friends there). There is some irony, Shirley….
edge2edge over 8 years ago
Maturity and alcohol consumption have nothing to do with each other. In fact understanding alcohol use is a sign of maturity. No one looks more immature than a sloppy drunk. Good for Luann.

How old is pru in luann-iverse?
Gerry Lee over 8 years ago
I suppose another way to take it is that Prudence is actually affirming Luann’s statement by calling attention to the fact that Luann is not drinking an alcoholic beverage. Prudence seemed to not want Luann getting drunk yesterday, so whether it would be illegal or not, I think Prudence would approve of the drink Luann is having, and see it as a sign of maturity. Looking at it this way, it is actually praise. On the subject of negativity in comments about the story and characters, I just would like to add that the characters have never been without flaws. Recently I commented that Luann seemed to be trying to one up Tiffany. I don’t remember when they were published, but I remember when Luann was young she would sit day dreaming of the perfect come back and put down to use on Tiffany. That was a long time ago, but the impression was reinforced for me in a more recent strip where Luann came home one day raging and shrieking about Tiffany and having a real hissy fit. For Luann to want to take a dig at Tiffany seemed in character to me. It doesn’t make Luann the devil, it doesn’t make her worse than Tiffany, it’s just part of who she is (from what I have seen). Better to love Luann complete with all her flaws than to turn a blind eye to them and pretend she’s perfect, at least it seems that way to me.And for no real reason I just want to say that I’d like Sun and Mook to come back to the story. I liked them.

Ok, I realize she may be under age and it’s not her choice but – not drinking alcohol is a real sign of maturity.

Lu Ann is not a rube from Hootin’ Holler. She lives in a city large enough to be home to both a community college and a university (and have a large enough audience to support an art museum / theatrical performance auditorium, apparently). She is also a short commute away from one of the nation’s largest cities, as we have seen by the cast’s day trips to San Diego. Eating Korean food (at a restaurant where she was taken by someone else) and using the Internet to make airline and hotel reservations, catching a taxi, reading a map, and even riding in a subway (which is not that different from catching a bus) should not be tasks that are completely outside her realm of experience, at age 18.

“The Fuse” is the name of the gallery / theater and “Kafe Kablooie” is the name of the restaurant. Does the bar have its own name, too? “Pru’s Brews”?

I don’t think Pru is mocking Luann at all concerning the drink. I think that Pru is a good influence for Luann, she’s a big sister type. Also, wasn’t it Ecstacy who got them into the club? She probably knew they’d get carded quickly and kicked out, but that it would still be exciting for them. The important thing was that Luann and Bernice had a great time in NY. They may have done different things than some, but everyone likes to do different things on a trip. For the typical tourist stuff, they did do the museum mile. That it all worked out for them is what matters.
locake over 8 years ago
I wonder if Luann has to pay for her drink since her parents own the place? I don’t see a lot of (any) paying customers in the place.

Pru is not mocking Luann — the cartoonist needs to spell it out as we can easily see it — you people are always looking for conflict where there isn’t any. God help the people in your lives if you do this to them — creating drama just to make your boring little existence more interesting…

Quite right. I’ve had 2 beers in my life, and could not finish either one. Tried a Zima and did not like that either. When a friend had his baby he and I went to another friend’s house. He and his girl brought out some Champagne and knowing I did not drink only gave me a mouthful to toast the baby. They all agreed it might not be great Champagne but it was good Champagne. They asked my opinion and my answer was that I thought it smelled and tasted like road tar and would prefer turpentine.

The Shirley Temple is only because of the drinking age law. It has nothing to do with Luann’s maturity.

Having a drink without booze is a more responsible and adult decision than many are willing to make. But you still have to worry about criminals trying to spike yourdrink.Or worse. Then, again there is Winston Churchill who lived into his 90s and, said, “On the whole, I got more from drink, than drink got from me.”
