Dad: So did Toni say anything about starting a family? Mom: They plan to wait a bit. But they want kids. Baby: hehehehehe Brad: Thanks for watchin' the twins again, mom! Dad: Well, I'm ready. Mom: I'm not.
Yep, stereotypes abound in today’s strip: Nancy fantasizing that she’ll be wiped out caring for grandkids while Frank thinks about the “fun” he’ll have doing the same. Second stereotype: assume that a couple will get knocked up minutes after the “I dos” are said.
Frank seems to be the optimistic character these days. Well, he does have a beautiful wife and a happy marriage so I’m grateful for at least someone being upbeat.
Sounds like Brad and Toni are well on the way to a successful marriage (from yesterday). This evening I’m kind of surprised at what Nancy envisioned being a grandmother was. The problem has a simple answer…Frank can take care of the other “twin!” while Nancy gets some alone time with just one of her grandchildren. I think today’s strip looks at what most men (not All men!!!) envision they can do with a grandchild: “play” with them…a lot of women (not All women!!!) seem to end up with the “work” part, and very little of the “play” part. This is why being with their grandchildren can end up being quite stressful for grandmothers. However, I think today’s grandfathers and grandmothers believe Both need to Share the “work” and the "play’ of watching grandchildren. My take on the whole thing is: love your grandchildren when you are alone with them, and then when the grandchildren get tired or cranky, know that you can gleefully hand them back to their parents when they return.
I always find this phrase “start a family” seems weird. If you have any relatives at all, you are already part of a family that started a long time ago. Why not just say “have children”?
I may or may not be “here” for several days…there is the possibility that we’ll lose our electricity once a very powerful storm hits this area on Saturday. This storm has the remnants of a weak hurricane…a Lot of rain and a Lot of wind (50 mph + ). The last time such a storm hit, like the one that is expected, there were many downed trees, torn up from their roots (because most still have leaves), and entangling power lines. This particular storm has the same dangerous potential. So, does anyone remember if LUANN or her family and friends were caught in the middle of an intense storm? I think that would be an interesting arc about how Brad and Toni responded to it as part of their jobs. ’Nite all! :)
When our oldest was expecting his first child, my wife hated the idea of being a grandmother. That attitude lasted precisely until the moment the child was born. At that point “hate” turned into “love”.
Case in point: We travelling to visit one of our children this weekend, and all my wife can talk about is seeing the grandkids. :)
I NEVER dumped my kids on my parents. We would visit of course, but we felt it was our job to care for them, not use our parents for spur of the moment babysitters. In fact they usually asked US if they could have them for the weekend or the summer.
Just WAIT Until the ‘Kids’ Talk themselves into ‘Adopting’ Shannon! Frank will Look just Like You in Panel Two after ONE Babysitting Session, with HER!
Very typical responses from parents thinking about the future of potential grandchildren. Usually it seems the future grandmother is more enthused than Nancy seems, but this is still within the realm of normal, day-to-day discussion by parents with kids about to get married.
I have to admit to being puzzled over why it seems that people automatically start discussing when grandchildren will come along, before the wedding even takes place. Here is a couple where both have full time jobs; maybe it would be more logical to wait and see if the wedding ‘takes’ before the discussion about grandchildren should kick in?
BTW, æ, we strongly agree that ultimately posters have to take responsibility for their own posts, and if they repeatedly choose to harass others then they need to go. When/if that person becomes willing to think and to educate himself or herself away from the harassing behavior then that is progress because then the behavior rather than the poster gets expelled due to that person’s own choices. Of course, most posters of any age do not behave that way, but it does not hurt for people to know when their harassing behavior is unusual (or highly unusual) for their age groups and what a demeaning image of them such behaviors create for others.
The wedding is not my favorite storyline, but its really been on the back burner and deserves its space. I like Tiffany, but you can’t spend every day on Tiff’s sexiness and Luann’s lack thereof. I miss Rosa, Knute, and Crystal but that’s my tough luck. I keep reading the strip and hoping that Miss Buxley from Beetle Bailey will make a guest shot some day.
The baby Nancy is holding on her left looks like a Brad Junior!BTW, when I entered this comment, it seemed to enter twice. So I deleted one and both of them disappeared. So here is a second try, I hope it only enters once.
Today’s strip would seem to imply that Nancy and Toni (and maybe Brad, too, though I doubt it) have had some intimate conversation to which we readers have not been privy. Nonetheless, it does seem to me that Mrs. DeGroot is jumping the gun here, so to speak. Wait until Brad has fired the first shot, so to speak….
I have to put my two cents in even if late. I think it’s meant to be funny, the difference between Frank and Nancy to the possibility of grandchildren. I bet if they were around she would be a great grandmom. Whether her drawn reaction is based on the amount of work helping to for “twins” would be age engendering, or that she is getting “old” or a combination of both is not clear but having grandchildren is such a stage for those of us who have been with the strip long enough to remember Brad’s butt sticking out of his car motor most of the time, and a grade school Luann mooning over Aaron Hill this is quite a stage as well. Sort of puts real time and Luannverse time in perspective.

Nancy recalls all the labor involved while Frank let Nancy deal with it and he could just play with the child without actually doing any dirty work.
