Thumbs up to Bernice for coming clean! As someone once said: “Stick with the truth: it’s easier to remember.” She did good today.
I still think she should be fired as RA though. Repeatedly violating the rules should have consequences, especially for those in a position of authority over others, and especially when one of the rules being violated is “don’t abuse your position for personal gain.”
GO BERNICE! now if you would only confess your feelings for Piro with the same honesty and fearlessness you admitted the rest of truth. And Piro, he DOES need to check the footage, so be quiet!
So the question of the day, or at least the week is: what does the video feed show? And how does it tie things up, if it does? And where are the relationships between the three main characters going? Actually 3 main questions.
“Hooray for honesty”, he foolishly said before the contents of the video are revealed and I find myself out in left field when the ball was hit to right field. Is Piro protecting someone?
On the surface, it just looks like Piro is going to absurd lengths to cover for Bernice. But the whole situation may actually be more complicated than it looks. For one thing – we still don’t know any more about “Dr. Heald”.
A Thing to Think About. Over at another strip, The Name of Which Shall Not Be Spoken, there was a poster who was annoyed with a certain storyline, or “arc” if you will, though he still liked the strip in general. He posted a comment saying that he’d be going on hiatus from the strip for the duration, not looking at on a daily basis, but checking every week or two to see if the story he did not care for had ended and one more pleasing had begun. Even if he had missed a few days, or even a week or so of the new story, the nature of the gocomics site would allow him to catch up easily. This solved several problems. He wouldn’t have to endure an arc that he disliked; He could spare himself the tedium and irritation he’d been feeling; and other posters wouldn’t have to endure his incessant whining about about how much he hated the current goings on. Critical comments about this strip, or any other, are fine if they explain what the commenter thinks is problematic or offer constructive ideas about how things could be done better. The “this sucks” and “this is boring” and onomatopoeic utterances of disgust are worthless. Spare yourself the pain and other posters the fingernails on the chalkboard charmlessness of your whining.
I wonder if Piro is actually covering for whoever DID break into the machine, and his note-studying session with Bernice was actually just to keep her busy so she wouldn’t catch them in the act.
Morality is the basis of civilization and truth is the substance of morality. Conversely, all facts are ultimately interpretations. Thus does the path to truth pass through adversity. This is why we have an adversarial legal system.
So the video will either show Piro leaving Bernice’s room or who broke into the vending machine or both. Have to assume there is more than one security camera and have to also assume they would be pointed at logical points for security and where surveillance should be required for student safety.
More bizarre comments today. (I urge you to filter out the alien brain parasites from your water.) Why is it so hard to believe that Piro is basically a very ethical person who has taken responsibility for staying late in Bernice’s dorm room? He evidently neither wants to implicate her nor judge her behavior. There is absolutely no evidence yet that he is motivated by any romantic attraction to Bernice. True, he was naive to think that he could prevent the guard from watching the video by falsely confessing. But it was a quick flawed decision – we all do that.
The security camera will show somebody we’ve never seen before breaking into the machine to get snacks to eat while watching the stolen television. We will never find out who it was.
1. I am pleased that Bernice took the “high road” in this situation, and immediately did the right thing. Others have talked about it being less than “real” because she has feelings for Piro, but I think that is a spurious issue. Bernice DID do the right thing. Perhaps some of it was due to her feelings for Piro, but I believe she is generally a very upright and caring character, and would do this same thing for others. I think if push-comes-to-shove… with Bernice, she will put doing the right thing ahead of her own interests.
2. In a similar way, I am pleased that Piro is attempting (even though it it is in a very foolish, idiotic, and problematic way) to “help” protect Bernice, by trying to take the fall for this vending machine vandalism. As I stated last week, I think it was a stupid thing for Piro to do, because the damage to him if he were believed to have vandalized the machine is FAR greater than what I would anticipate would be the damage to Bernice due to a curfew violation.
With the above (specifically #2) said… I suppose that there could be a risk of very harsh penalties for Bernice. If we were to envision the “harshest” potential penalties, it could be that Bernice would lose her R.A. position, and hence would then lose her free room/board (typical payment for R.A.s). That could indeed be a significant financial hardship for Bernice. BUT, I am of the opinion that such a harsh penalty would not be what is enacted for a dorm curfew violation. I would anticipate that if Bernice and Piro were to simply and truthfully state that they were studying, the penalty would be more of a minor “slap-on-the-wrist” sort of demerit.
Now, what is going to be fun, hopefully, this week… IS if we get to find out who DID break into the vending machine… if we actually get to learn who is on the video tape, that could:
1. Potentially be a nobody that none of the characters know, and who is not a regular player in the Luanniverse.
2. Potentially be someone Piro was guessing or knew was responsible and this could be a person at least he, but also many in the Luanniverse may know.
3. Potentially be a main character that shocks and surprises all of us (hopefully this is not the case).
Now, the other thing I have been hypothesizing about is…. how will Tiffany behave in this drama? It is possible she may be coming down the hallway as we read, and in the next day or two may burst into the Security Guard’s office. If she does this, what will she do? Will she be angry that Piro was apparently with Bernice and “rat her out”? Will she take keep the “knowlege” of Piro and Bernice to herself and try to use it in some fashion later on? Or, will she take the high road, be understanding and helpful and allow this to further show the kinder, gentler Tiffany we have been getting glimpses of?
As much fun as this is, Greg Evans is not Agatha Christie or Joseph Conrad, so we’ll stay in safe, shallow waters. Liam Neeson will not burst in shooting all Albanians in sight to save the candy stash. There will be no Blackhawk helicopters hovering, with floodlights illuminating the crime scene, and the Navy Seal Team 6 will be told to “stand down”. Speculation is so enjoyable.
I’m starting to wonder if Piro knows who has been breaking into things (i.e. the TV) and is trying to cover for that person. His thought balloon last week made it seem like he was protecting Bernice but it is strange that he is trying to keep the guard from checking the video. Of course the guard is going to check the video. The question now is where are the security cameras located and what did the guard see on the recorded images? I always thought those cameras are real time. Do images get saved for a period , then erased (say after 24 hrs) to make room for more?
@RSH: I mentioned that earlier and got poo – pooed on the idea. Piro might know who took the TV and may think the same person may be responsible for the vending machine break – in. Makes sense to me. It could be possible, but we will have to see how Greg unfolds things for us.

Most systems store what is recorded on hard drives or solid state drives. How the information is dealt with can be dependent on how the user sets up the system. Prior recordings can be automatically deleted per a schedule set up by the system’s owner. Some systems do not record continuously, but instead begin recording when it is sensed that someone enters the area. The system we have on our home is a 16 channel system (meaning we can have 16 separate cameras connected to the system), but we only have 8 cameras being used. In the mode we currently have it in, it records continuously and, since it is connected to our internet router, we can be anywhere in the world or just down the street and see what is going on in and about our home on our cell phones, a tablet, or another computer. Live. 5 of the cameras are outside, and the remaining 3 are downstairs covering entry as well as areas where it would be necessary to walk through to gain access to the rest of the house.
If one is curious, look up “NVR Security”. Our system is made by Lorex (www.lorextechnology.com). NVR = Network Video Recorder. Depending on the recording mode (1080p, 2K, or 4K), it will store up to 9 days of 24/7 continuous recording on the internal 2 TB hard drive. Up to a 6 TB hard drive can be installed. I do not remember, but it may hold a second drive, if desired.
A tad late in coming clean, ‘Ernice, or Bee (to give you the elided letter by which some know you). Piro will not be taking the rap for you, as he had tried. Now, you will have to face the music. But I don’t hear the tune….
Well now Bernice has a new nickname of “’ernice”, given to her by her true love Piro. Of course it does raise a question as to whether Piro is his full name or a nickname and his legal name might be Bpiro or Pirogi.
