Unfortunate timing with this strip appearing right after the Texas shooting massacre, but obviously Greg can’t control that. I won’t disrespect the victims and their families by making a joke of it.
This would be so much fun if it turned out that Tara supplied Luann with a gun so they could go shooting and then she drove her to a convenience store or bank she planned to rob.
Sure hope everyone who was dissing Luann for being all dull and that, and cheering on Tara for advocating fun, is having lots of fun right now. Me, I’m figuring I’ll sit the rest of this arc out because I can’t see a real positive ending to anything that starts out with at least one kid who has never shown an interest in weapons suddenly deciding to go shooting (possibly with a young Annie Oakley, trained by those ‘bad friends’ she fell in with who talked her into stealing a TV…)
Wow. Unexpectedly bold. I can’t help thinking this is such a relevant topic but at the same time it is a bit raw still after all that went down in Texas. Not really a subject I would have thought to see here.
I think it’s gonna be shooting videos or the like. Nevertheless, Tara looks likely to become a dropout. I hope Tara doesn’t blow off Luann for staying on course. I would like to keep Tara in the “family.”
Conclusion: One of my givens is incorrect. Maybe we aren’t really adults. Maybe adults don’t always make responsible decisions. Maybe going shooting — as I propose it — is more responsible than going class?
Skeet….dice…videos….arrows….the breeze…..one’s mouth….plenty of things that one can shoot. Guns, too.
-
Question is, are there higher, more meaningful aspirations at play? And could they be going about it, the right way? Or, are they just shooting for the stars with rubber bands? We don’t know, just yet- the story continues….
Boy the comments related to guns and gun control laws. I think we need more, I think that AR-15’s and other kinds of assault weapons needs more stringent protections, and in this case, if the Air Force had sent the discharge information to the civilian authorities, maybe this guy could not have gotten the horrible weapon he had. But ironically I was going to say that Greg has people led around by the nose, what with the scamp personna of Tara. I doubt very highly if she has anything really remotely related to anything illegal or dangerous in mind, but the anticipation is fun to watch. Unfortunately this arc happens when the latest mass murder this time in a church happened. The 2nd Amendment is an example of the effect of the law of unintended consequences, because I am sure the founding fathers did not have assault rifle mass murder in their range of ideas. But I bet it will be something silly, but not dangerous. I like Tara, and she is in the strip precisely because she is disruptive to it, but in a good way I think/hope.
Tara has a skewed view about what being adult means. No wonder she gets into trouble. She will again at the CC, and she better not drag Luann into it – if she is smart.
Interesting. I am curious as to how Greg is going to choose to handle “shooting” in a family comic. Is it as most presume…. with a gun or rifle? Or is it something else (camera, etc)?
To me… Tara does not seem to be a “gun” sort of individual. But, you never know. And with guns being so out of the scope of normal activities drawn in “Luann” over the years…. is this some sort of planned “teachable” moment by Greg?
All I can say, is that today I am feeling flummoxed about what may next happen.
People go to shooting ranges every day. It is okay to talk about it in this comic. If Luann does not want to go with Tara, she can say No and go into her class.
Keep in mind that these comic strips are not done overnight. They are not done at the snap of a finger, the blink of an eye, or the wiggle of a nose. This cartoonist and others like him (or her) can not predict the outcome of what happens when they write a joke or draw a gag. Again as I said a previous posting elsewhere, it’s just the hand of fate that enjoys playing his (or her) cruel senseless game at their expense. Our group is still sadden over the tragic events that happened in Las Vegas as well as what happened just a week ago in New York City. But please, don’t blame that on the cartoonist. They are only doing what they see is right and humorous.
I see one of two paths….. a) “shooting” refers to photography or b) “shooting” takes us on a journey where Greg has a teachable moment arc… one that he wants to have deep significance and meaning. For me, I hope it is a fun photography arc. :)
If Luann is planing on being a public school teacher, she is going to have to be a role model and avoid public drunkenness, online photo embarrassment, wild parties and rumors etc. for the rest of her career. Might as well blow some steam off now. Totally OK with it.
Ah, guns. Use of the word alone acts as such a “trigger” for some people. It’s a red-herring debate, really, when it comes to mass attacks, since knives and trucks have been seen to be pretty effective as well and people aren’t “triggered” by knives and trucks. The real question that needs to be addressed is what’s in the back of everyone’s mind: “Why are these happening and why do they keep happening?” If you think about it, the answer is remarkably simple. Note a commonality of these events, particularly since Columbine, is that the perpetrators do not intend to survive the event. Why is that? Simple: The 24-hour news cycle. Killers KNOW that their names will be on TV for days and remembered forever, giving them a sort of post suicide-by-rampage celebrity that they would never get by just killing themselves. So, what’s the solution? Again, simple: All of the news channels must agree to NOT name the killers or glorify them in any way. Impossible? Probably. News outlets like ratings and money too much. However, there IS a precedent for this, in that minors who commit crimes are not named because they are minors. So, they COULD all agree not to name the killers, and I contend that this would likely stop future incidents pretty quickly. Will they, though? Well, it’s been over 18 years since Columbine and they’ve made it pretty clear what they prefer to do. So, until that changes, the cycle continues.
I don’t know what Tara has been shooting, other than the bull. But she does not strike me as a responsible model for Luann to be following, no matter what she shoots—guns, cameras, bows and arrows, or the breeze! Go to class, Luann.
and this is why we are in the mess we are in now, and will get worse: Teenagers, thinking they are adults, and that their adult decisions must be good….making decisions based on “if it feels good, it must be right.”

Luann is going to fold her arms so many times, she may as well start doing Jack Benny impersonations.
And if any character was going to start mentioning how many abortions she has had, well this is the one.
Probably an alchoholic, too.
This has gotta be a short arc.
One week only, with Tara showing off her handgun on Saturday.

Tara really shouldn’t have a gun. She’s wildly unpredictable.
Wizardgoat about 7 years ago
Very ambiguous. Shooting what?
( ) A gun?
( ) Your movie cam?
( ) Your mouth?
( ) Your middle digit?
… and at whom or what?
If it’s a gun, it should be at a target or a game animal.
If any of the other three, it could be:
( ) The instructor you’re skipping on?
( ) A campus cop?
( ) A politician?
( ) Harvey Weinstein?
