I’ll take it! You can’t get carved wood like that for a month’s wages—unless you happen upon some clueless students like those two garage-selling what they don’t understand. They’ll probably sell each piece in the double-digits only to see it a month later, in an antique shop window, after a dab of polish and a few tightened nails, selling in the quadruple digits.
Most “Victorian” are too feminine for young guys like those. Gunther is fine about having them because he grew up with the and doesn’t really notice how feminine they are – after all, his mother bought them. For future’s investment, buy young man’s stuff for when you have your own place. Heck, many of your mother’s stuff are collectibles and valuable. You’ll get a pretty penny out of them.
I suppose the real question here is who actually owns the furniture. Did Irma transfer ownership to Gunther? (Certainly not to Les.) Is it Gunther’s to sell?
I think Les is missing the bigger picture it’s only furniture yes it’s for a man but the flip side were will you get the cash for the new furniture Les!!
I hear a song playing softly in the background:“You can’t always get what you want But if you try sometimes you just might find You get what you need…”
Another alternative, furniture can be updated. Switch out the hardware, try a new lampshade, refinish, re-upholster, polish. Make the home eclectic, get some trendy pillows, pictures, accent pieces, area rugs, window treatments. Let Gunther sell what he can live without, as it is his furniture, but then it is also Gunther’s money. Les, you got the bigger bedroom—-furnish that to your liking with your own money.
@kenhense: One of the things I like when watching Antiques Roadshow on PBS is when they show something from a few years ago, and show whether the item appreciated or depreciated in value since the original appraisal. The values go in cycles; it seems to depend basically on what buyers decide they really want, and how rare it is. And as far as Gunther getting away from his mother’s house and furniture, he did go to Peru, remember? So it’s not as if he’s never gone away. He was all set to get rid of most of the stuff she was giving him, until Les decided it wasn’t welcome. Now all of the sudden Gunther wants to keep it. I think this is a cycle, too. Whatever Irma wants kept, Gunther doesn’t want, until Les says ‘get rid of it’…
I see a lot of people on here think it’s a bad idea to get rid of this furniture. Personally I’d rather not have my place looking like the Golden Girls live there, but to each their own….
So… are we to assume that Leslie already has a full compliment of furniture, to replace the existing stuff immediately? And if not, then they’re just gonna sell this stuff, and sit/sleep on the floors until enough money is acquired to buy new furnishings? Because they AIN’T gonna make enough from a yard/garage sale.Oh, wait… I forgot – this is “Luanniverse.” Of course, they’re gonna have a kick-a** yard/garage sale, and make a boat-load of $$$. Carry on…
Never once even noticed the type of furniture I had, until about age 40. Heck, I lived with yard sale furniture stuff for years. Spent all my money on muscle cars and guitars and motorcycles and parties to care about what kinds of chair my butt was resting on.
I remember when people were buying cheap Danish Modern crap and you could pick up a really nice pieces of furniture for hardly anything. I got an old mahogany credenza for $50. It was massive and in great condition.
Les continues to reject the fact that Gunther’s mother is now his aunt. I agree with Les, this type of furniture is old and rather depressing. But you can’t make your new aunt sad and make angry your old uncle, who loves her so much, for that.
This is another example of comic strips making people older in time than they should be. Gunther’s mother is what 50? Meaning she was born around 1968 and likely started buying furniture in the 1990s, even her parents born in the 40s would have 1960 furniture.
There had better be some female involvement thrown in here soon or this “living together” arc will not look like Brad and TJ’s relationship… if you get my drift.
As wolfiiig opined, “Time for these two to go their separate ways.”
Les might what to consider how this will make Aunt Irma very upset. And when “Mama ain’t happy” it will land on Uncle Al. And when Uncle Al ain’t happy… Mr. Nobody won’t be happy.
A Study of Regression, by Gunther Berger. The story of a once lucky guy who won the heart of a beautiful girl and ran off with her to the mountains in Peru, only to end up with a rat-faced crook moving used furniture into an out house, or back house, or something appropriately obscure, and as far down a mountain as you can get.
What’s more likely – that it ends up with Brad & Toni, or that it is next seen as props in some period piece play being put on at The Fuze? Oh, wait, the second one would mean Greg would actually have to draw a performance of something…
Have to agree with Les. Sell it. Get comfortable stuff that is good for having friends hang out. Not museum pieces. May not get enough money to fully furnish, but your first place when young shouldn’t be full of stuff…you are supposed to be broke.Though I admit I would probably wait until the happy couple get back from their honeymoon and tell Gunther’s mom the plan. So it isn’t so much a surprise slap in the face.
I do feel kind of bad for Les. He does seem to bringing a lot to the roommate relationship in terms of forcing Gunther to let go of his old attachments, and honestly, he seems to have gotten the message that thrift won’t get him where he wants to be as an adult as much as taking an opportunity to make make more money (an idea which many rich people espouse, BTW). Gunther’s plans for the future just seem to involve whining and living in the past if this is any indication. Seriously, Gunther, where do you see yourself in 10 years? Living in moms backyard? At least Les has a plan to get you some cash and potentially out of there. Gotta respect that.
Well, it always was absurdly naive of Gray to assume his nephew and Gunther could live together, not supposing that they might be hopelessly different.
I’m so over Gunther’s life right now, he’s not changed since he was in HS, same clothes, no backbone, can’t stand up for himself – it’s his stuff tell Les to go jump in the lake if he doesn’t like it – we’ll see Gunth sell it then cry when Mama comes home and finds out he sold it all……Lets move on
I suppose leaving Les and Gunther to figure out, cold turkey (on their own), how to share an apartment was a good move by Al and Irma. They can enjoy their honeymoon w/o having to witness any of this. But I am dreading a second week of watching these two interact. I imagine Les pocketing some of the cash from the sale. Gunther needs to stay on top of things…. and get a lock for his bedroom or maybe install some cyber surveillance that he can download.
Les is right, but for the wrong reason. Gunth desperately needs to get out from under his mother’s apron. True, the furniture should be appraised—but dump it. Every stick and scrap. Gunth needs his own furniture, even it’s cheap mass produced crap. (A favorite piece or two can be put in storage—but look at it again in two years, I bet you won’t like it that much anymore.)

Oh Pity! Having that furniture around makes “Poor Little Les.” Unhappy!
All the more reason to KEEP it Gunther! If for no other reason than Keeping it makes the Worthless, Two-bit Punk, MISERABLE.

They should contact antique stores and ask them to make them offers. A garage sale will only net a pittance of their true vale!
