Who really matters in our democracy — the general public, or wealthy elites? That’s the topic of a recent study by political scientists Martin Gilens of Princeton and Benjamin Page of Northwestern.
The study’s gotten lots of attention over the past year, because the authors conclude, basically, that the US is a corrupt oligarchy where ordinary voters barely matter.
Or as they put it, “economic elites and organized interest groups play a substantial part in affecting public policy, but the general public has little or no independent influence.”
Solution for excess power of government and the pull of large interests like unions, big corporations and the like…..make government so small that it is pointless to try to influence it.
Since corporations are considered persons, they will claim owning Congress is supported by a literal reading of the Constitution. It was written ‘by and for white men of property,’ after all. It’s not too large a leap to believe that those with more property matter most.
Ladies, not only do you have those very difficult steps to climb but you’ve got a glass ceiling above them. Good luck with that !
( In reality, thanks to the number of women who have gotten politically active, and are running for offices across the country, the United States may, hopefully be saved, from complete implosion and/or civil war. )

Oh, the Supreme Court decided that a bribe can be nice
Only if it’s a corporate bribe
They’ll attack with their PACs and other such-like vice
But I don’t belong to that tribe
I don’t have the money
To buy polit’cal honey
To give Congress my shirt and coat
My bribing funds are lacking
From pollution I am hacking
No, you can’t buy a vote with a vote
[I do have other verses for this here song parody, but I didn’t want to annoy people with a really long post—of course, if anybody WANTS to read the whole dang thing, let me know]
All a bit fed up? Feeling ill, sad, disgusted, morbid, dejected or angry are we? Is this what’s it’s all about?? I have no answers, I too feel the same. All I can advise is to vote soon. Things might get a tad better. Then again…Old habits are not only hard but impossible to change.

It’s been going on for a while, but this administration added consierge service for the biggest spending “visitors”.

This so unrealistic. Today’s congressmen/women go to the corporate execs to do the groveling.

I do not understand this cartoon. The people climbing the wall to get in appear to be working class stiffs.

Buttercup is president for all Americans – who have money and influence. That keeps the audience small and friendly – every comic’s dream.

Yep, the best government money can buy.

Congress really makes it tough for corporate lobbyists. They should install a drive up bribe… er donation window.

Yep. In the US, bribery is now legal. They call it “freedom.”

@Brain Pudding……ahh so that large and powerful interests have completely untrammelled power eh? In what way would that be better for the rest of us?

oh how different our government would be if there were no money from lobbies funding re-elections.

Q: How come corporations are cutting way back on lobbying expenses?
A: They’ve decided that, long-term, it’s cheaper to own than to rent.

And another big shout-out and thank you to Citizens United – whose name makes even less sense today than yesterday!

We all understand that corporations are made up of people, right?

Maybe the reason you don’t get it is because it’s too real to be funny.

This is one of the best illustrations of the difference between corporations and the rest of us as it applies to today’s politics I’ve ever seen. . .
