“Memory Man!!” the Elder Super Hero who remembers appointments, anniversaries, birthdays of all the grand children, who is President, when to take the drugs, refill prescriptions, where the car keys are, where he is going, where his glasses are, who his friends are, which ones are alive. A Super Hero for the aged
oh dear – another strip that sounds like they’ve invaded our home. I have a physical calendar in the kitchen with sticky notes, 2 different ones on my laptop and my phone and Kindle can access 1 or the other. It’s the only way I can keep my husband’s doctor appointments straight.
Around 20 years ago, when he was still working husband bought a Palm Pilot. He rarely had any entries in it. I used an appointment book. Husband had to have cataract surgery, could not see the Palm, suggested that I use it to see how it was. It worked great with Lotus Organizer and I was going to buy one. He decided that he had not needed it in 2 years so I should just keep it. Later he got us Palm Centro phones.
He created a monster. I won’t give up the Centro and Organizer. Had to switch cell companies, he found an unlocked Centro, even though they had not been made in a few years. It died. He found that a Blackberry with old BB software, it would sync with Organizer. That was great until the Blackberry stopped making phone calls, something I rarely used it for it anyway and I thought of keeping it and sending messages on the Internet – then the Internet died. My idea was for me to me to a get flip phone and carry it with my old Centro, but he would not let me. So I got an android phone. I now keep our calendar in both the android and the Centro and still sync daily with Organizer.
He has had to make a Win XP virtual machine in my Win 7 desktop computer so I could continue to use Organizer. My laptops were Win XP, no problem. Now he made me get this laptop – Win 10 and will be putting a Win XP virtual machine in it for me so I can keep using the Centro and Organizer.
I keep all of our appointments, things to do, contacts, etc. in it. The Palm- Organizer setup is soooo much better than anything else he has found for me to use. Alarms go off all day – time to do the laundry, don’t forget to take out his insulin pen for him, make dinner…. I really depend on it and he depends on me to use it as he doesn’t want to bother to remember anything that needs to be done. And yes, I still have his original Palm Pilot also. At the end of the month I print out what he needs to know about for the next month as a pdf and email it to him so he knows what to expect.

Top of Arlo’s secret list: Stay as far away from the house and Janis as possible for a week. Maybe longer.

My mom has to do this for my daddy with doctors appointments. She also goes with him to make sure that he goes.

I don’t recall Janis micro managing Arlo before. They seem to be close, yet individual, and very respectful of each other.

Hubby and I are both in our mid-70s. We each have our own pocket calendars, but we also write things on the big one in the den, next to the computer.

Best thing about smart phones, they keep track of all that crap and will nag you about it.

When Arlo married Janis little did he realize that he was getting a wife, a best friend and a secretary. ;-)

We always use sticky notes on the bathroom mirror to remind us of things – it’s the one place we’re sure to notice them!

KP sends me a text reminder and asks for a “Y” to acknowledge. So, I do. Then they send an acknowledgment of my acknowledgment.

Ouch. Janis is having sleep issues lately and now this manic behavior. Maybe one of those memos needs to be a doctor appointment for her.
rugeirn about 6 years ago
Yes, you should thank her, Arlo. Heartily. And go on thanking her. Daily.
