According to a Native American saying, “Only a white man can cut a foot off the end of a blanket and sew it on the other end and think that he has a longer blanket.”
I get up at 5:15 AM and hit the streets at 5:30 for my hour-long walk. For the past couple weeks, I’ve enjoyed the light on my return journey. I am not plunged into darkness for the whole trip for another 6 weeks.
If it’s got to be done, I really, really like the 4 o’clock on a Friday and then the ‘Fall Back’ the day after Thanksgiving to lay in bed and sleep off that last piece of pie you just HAD to HAVE and got up in the middle of the night to eat.
I would have liked the idea to change the clock to 5 p.m. and go home an hour early. Would have meant enjoying a longer happy hour to celebrate TGIF. There were weeks when that was all that offered any hope of a good finish to the week.
To use my favorite quote about Daylight Savings Time:
“When told the reason for Daylight Saving time, the old Indian said: “Only a white man would believe that you could cut a foot off the top of a blanket and sew it to the bottom of a blanket and have a longer blanket.”
Being retired has one distinct advantage; I can ignore clocks. My “day” starts whenever I feel like getting up, and ends when I decide to go back to bed.
Daylight Savings time is the perfect example, of governmental mismanagement. As we keep doing it over and over, it provides no savings, its detrimental to peoples health, and in fact has no benefit at all. More over we know this, and we still keep doing. Amazing ain’t it.
Back when I was in grade school, and living on a farm, I had a teach explain to us that the reason DST existed was because it allowed energy savings so farmers would have more daylight during their working hours (and she threw in other professions, but growing up on a farm in Plant City Florida, at the time we were primarily a farming and (phosphate) mining town). I was actually sent home with a letter to my parents for pointing out that I did not believe this because farmers went to work at sun-up regardless of what the clock said, and miners worked day and night so the sun was not a factor. She didn’t appreciate my questioning her ‘truth’, I suppose. My father told me that sometimes you just have to nod and smile.
Question: if they were to move ‘jump ahead’ – a really good idea – to Friday at 4pm, how would they handle ‘fall back’ to get the same advantage to both workers and firms? Maybe Saturday or Sunday at noon?
since retiring I bought a clock panted the face, and removed the minute hand and then move the hour hand in a random position between the hours. I now only have a vague idea of the time. for appointments I set an alarm on my cell phone.
It’s not WW1 anymore (or WW2), and the farmers don’t need extra daylight for the war effort. Time to end this ridiculous “daylight savings time” once and for all. Changing the time twice a year is beyond stupid..
I was taught that you just go to be an hour earlier.I love it, cause once a year I get to sleep in an hour later. Yeah, it works against me 4 months later, but I still like the novelty of it.
Wow, people really missed the punchline on this. Of course, there aren’t too many people that work 8 to 5 anymore, so leaving work an hour early kind of went over their heads.

This year , I did it on Wednesday at 4AM. I was anxious to add that hour of daylight to the end of the day.

That’s why we don’t do it here in Arizona!

I’d rather not have it at all, but if you’re going to do it, making the time change at 4:00 pm on Friday seems reasonable.

That’s a great idea. Spring forward an hour on Friday at 4 PM and you get to go home an hour earlier.

Daylight Savings time is an anacronism that should be done away with. Let the people adjust to the sun as they have for millennia.

It was never a good idea and never had a truly valid reason behind it.
