I spend some quality time every day commenting on the Go Comics ‘toons… And there’re always books. And volunteering to do good works… writing a memoir… Dubya took up painting and I hear his projects are getting almost good enough to show outside the kitchen fridge area. I just heard about a guy who spends time sleeping with the cats at the local animal shelter. There are all kinds of things to do.
You’re supposed to slow down and enjoy friends, family, and life in general after you retire. Any time I hear someone say “I’m a lot busier now than I was before I retired,” I reply “That means you’re doing it wrong!”
the wife came up with a new hobby for me, when i retired. it’s called laundry now i can’t find any websites for this hobby, ok-ok there are ones trying to sell me soap. but nothing on the hobby it’self………
Yes, why would I want to do what I choose with my own time? I would so much rather spend my days unable to leave my desk and taking orders from a jerk.
There’s no shortage of things to do, and new things to learn. And you know what? If I REALLY still want to analyze data on a spreadsheet, I can still download some data and do that! Not sure why I’d want to, but I still can.
My parents took up travel — got to all 7 continents and went to the Iditarod Race several years in a row. For 20 years, we kids never knew what country they were in at any given time. Most of my retired colleagues, on the other hand, usually end up getting called back to work part time.
A better than fair number of retirees spend their time going bankrupt from health issues even if most of them have health insurance. And then there’s plenty of those whose pension, health, and other retirement benefits disappear when the company reneges on their agreed funding.
What oh what would I ever do with an extra 10 hours every day? Besides read more, bike more, watch more movies, did I mention READ, play more games, spend more time arguing with idiots on the interwebs (hey, they can’t ALL be positive) and just maybe actually get halfway through my to read list? I see people like neighbor Bob and I can only feel sorry for them because they never really had a life outside their job to begin with.
For those of you who don’t have time to spend at GoComics, save and invest what you can. Even a little can build up to enough FU money to allow you to smile sweetly and say no to your boss when they try to steal what remains of your free time.
#5: Figure out the rules of the IRS, Social Security, and Medicare. They are going to be with me for the rest of my life. I hope to someday find the cheese in the maze before I find the exit.
I was retired (not voluntary, and quite sudden) about 18 months ago. I’ve never been so busy in my life. I keep saying I need a vacation. No, travel, at least the kind of travel I do, doesn’t count as I always said I needed a vacation after each exhausting trip. I can’t do the sit-on-a-beach type of vacation.
when you retire or close to retirement you need to be honest with yourself. you have to think of your health, wealth and your spouse. I live in a retirement community normally in the first year people will gain 20 lbs, drink to much or spend beyond their means.
Of course not, it’s what you do while sitting. High on my list is searching for movies to watch later and falling asleep, but awaking in time for dinner and checking for mail. I did join a few dating sites but found ladies who include “travel” in their to-do bucket-lists really mean it while they totally disregard my “no travel because I traveled often from sea-to-shining-sea during my long career.” Later, I revised it slightly to include no travel involving any and all commercial carriers.
Sadly, those without a life outside of their professional lives are most likely to die within a few years. The stress of boredom and emptiness is a hard thing to survive.
My spouse can’t wait to retire. We have so many places we want to visit and things we want to do. Read more, travel more and play more music are 3 on the list.
Bob definitely has the wrong idea about what Retirement really represents. It’s a golden opportunity to be a Child all over again. Especially if you have the health and resources to make the most of it.
I worked for an insurance company years ago. One of the mortality facts our actuaries would like to remind anyone within ear shot, the average life span, after retiring, is two and a half years.
