Coming Soon š At the beginning of April, youāll be

Back in the ā50s there was this humor book full of ādecodings.ā (Does anyone remember the title?)Kid: "It doesnāt fit!" Meaning: The other kids have a different color.Teenager: āIām sick of boys! Theyāre so childish and immatureā¦āMeaning: If Mom doesnāt let me wear lipstick, Iāll DIE!Saleslady: āItās a nice hat.āMeaning: Itās a terrible hat, but itās cheap.
I often find myself using similar techniques. Itās not about being bored per se, itās about having a schedule, or something I really should be doing. Not including ironing my socks. Usually.
As Calvin said so rightly, āverbing weirds language.ā But English is notorious for adjectiving nouns, nouning verbs, verbing predicates (as in this strip) or entire sentences, or simply allowing a single word to occupy every known part of speech. It has wonderful flexibility.
When I say that to someone on the phone, itās usually because Iām fairly certain Iām boring the bejesus out of them. [By the way, Stephan, youāve used the less common spelling of ābejesusā there.]
A friend of mine will call, actual talking, and we chat, the old fashioned way. Anyhow he will say I guess Iāll be going and then does an encore. That is when I say: āI guess, Iāll let you go then!ā
In workplace meetings, anyone who says, āIāll say this in conclusionā or āIāll say this and shut upā really means āIāve got another 45 minutes to an hour to go.ā
Odd, that people get so offended by the phrase, āI should probably let you go.ā When I say it, it only means, āI really have to leave you now so I can go to the bathroom.ā which, of course, I donāt want to actually say.
