Do you have a minute to take a poll?

    Q1: are you boring?

    Q2: is this poll boring?

Back in the ā€˜50s there was this humor book full of ā€œdecodings.ā€ (Does anyone remember the title?)Kid: "It doesnā€™t fit!" Meaning: The other kids have a different color.Teenager: ā€œIā€™m sick of boys! Theyā€™re so childish and immatureā€¦ā€Meaning: If Mom doesnā€™t let me wear lipstick, Iā€™ll DIE!Saleslady: ā€œItā€™s a nice hat.ā€Meaning: Itā€™s a terrible hat, but itā€™s cheap.

I often find myself using similar techniques. Itā€™s not about being bored per se, itā€™s about having a schedule, or something I really should be doing. Not including ironing my socks. Usually.

As Calvin said so rightly, ā€œverbing weirds language.ā€ But English is notorious for adjectiving nouns, nouning verbs, verbing predicates (as in this strip) or entire sentences, or simply allowing a single word to occupy every known part of speech. It has wonderful flexibility.

When I say that to someone on the phone, itā€™s usually because Iā€™m fairly certain Iā€™m boring the bejesus out of them. [By the way, Stephan, youā€™ve used the less common spelling of ā€˜bejesusā€™ there.]

A friend of mine will call, actual talking, and we chat, the old fashioned way. Anyhow he will say I guess Iā€™ll be going and then does an encore. That is when I say: ā€œI guess, Iā€™ll let you go then!ā€

In workplace meetings, anyone who says, ā€œIā€™ll say this in conclusionā€ or ā€œIā€™ll say this and shut upā€ really means ā€œIā€™ve got another 45 minutes to an hour to go.ā€

Odd, that people get so offended by the phrase, ā€œI should probably let you go.ā€ When I say it, it only means, ā€œI really have to leave you now so I can go to the bathroom.ā€ which, of course, I donā€™t want to actually say.
