Better yet, Nancy, have Luann take a job. She currently only has a few hours at the children center and that’s low paying job. She can make better money elsewhere. My younger son brings home $1,000 in tips plus wages working as a waiter and a bartender at an upscale restaurant with specialized menu and wealthy patrons who tip well. She’s a community college taking how many classes? Looks like two – Chemistry and art? Art does not require much studying – done mostly in the classroom. Chem is all about memorizing for finals. She can handle a job.
How much of the day do they spend cuddling? Doesn’t Frank have to leave for work sometime? Just where do they do that cuddling that a nudist would interrupt it?
Well, I feel vindicated. The other day I mentioned that perhaps Nancy should get a job and some other commenter attacked me, basically saying “Oh so you dislike that character too?!?”
Geez, the Luanniverse gets farther and farther detached from reality. They’re in a state that has a housing shortage. It’s a known thing that demand is outstripping supply, and all they can attract are the dregs to rent their room?
So… what about Ted’s Dad? Ignore Luann’s sexist and age-ist outburst and evaluate Ted’s Dad on his own merits, Frank & Nancy!
Wow – G & K used some imagination on those applicants. But the more normal issues are whether the applicant has a job and a credit history that doesn’t show a lot of unpaid bills.
As Luann time is so hard to keep track of, we don’t know how many courses Luann has and how much she has completed. I think Luann must be pushing 20, so she would have taken more than we know about. Luann’s job with kids probably just pays for her spending money. It would help to know if Luann is close to getting her two year degree – after which she could work for a while and take one course at a time toward a higher degree.
I’m somewhat surprised that they’re still on this rental arc. This much discussion of the need for revenue sounds a bit strained. First the DeGroot’s bought Mrs. Horner’s house when she moved to an assisted living home. Then they bought an old warehouse “for fun.” All that at about the same time Luann started Pitts. Strange time to bring this up.
Oh well. Welcome to the Luanniverse Roller Coaster ride!
A nudist with six cats and an RV can live in the RV with the cats.
Frank and Nancy can collect rent on the space and never have to see him/her, and the room is vacant to rent to another tenant. Bonus points for renting the RV space at Brad and Toni’s, or at The Fuse, instead of at their own place.
Frank’s optimism about cuddling time doesn’t match Nancy’s bait-and-switch on accounting and will preparation. No way did they finish all that this fast.
C’mon, Frank – the family is in dire straits and needs the income, Nancy is willing to go to work to help things out, and all you are worried about is that encroaching on your cuddle time? It is all about you, is it not?
.
Do not be so self – absorbed, do not crush her dreams! Send poor Nancy off to that grueling job starting tomorrow! (/s)
What would be the objection with a nudist? Greg seems to believe that they are nude 100% of the time. In reality, unless the household was also naturist, they would confine their nudity to their own room, plus whatever naturist venues that s/he should happen to go to. No reason to object at all. On the other hand, it’s hard to believe that a naturist would mention her/his lifestyle in an application for a room since it would be completely immaterial.
OK, G & K – Where ya goin’ with this? Are you having Nancy work some place where she might encounter Ann??? Hmmmm…….. I say have Tiff come to stay in the room. That will be a total hoot to watch them go at it as adults! And, hopefully, maybe showcase a little maturity on both!
Nancy does the ordering, and, paperwork for the Fuse? What does Al Gray do then? He’s supposed to be the manager of the Fuse. Shouldn’t the manager be taking care of all those administrative duties?
Better yet…. Luann moves out AND gets her own job AND quits school since she’s wasting it AND they sell the two houses AND they sell The Fuse AND they move to a retirement community because they’re old as dirt.
Ah. So in desperation, Nancy wants to take a job to help make ends meet. How Noble and Self Sacrificing. But in all seriousness, you COULD argue that Nancy already has TWO jobs: Keeping the books and ordering supplies for the Fuse, plus home maker. BOTH “Unpaid.”
I’m afraid I have to agree with Cap, though. Luann should be the one getting a “job.” A REAL job this time around. Maybe dropping out a semester from Community College, working hard, saving money, and when she returns to college, she transfers to Mooney U.
I hate to say this, but this “idea” of separating her from from most of the “gang” by putting them at Mooney and Her at Community, just didn’t cut it, IMHO. Perhaps it’s time for a “reboot” where Lu was placed where the “action is.”
Oh, one more thing. Whatever “job” Nancy or Luann gets? I’m hoping Ann Eiffel ends up being their “BOSS.”
Nancy, at least, would ”mop the floor up” with Ann……….,
I like the idea of Nancy finding a job outside the family business. This can really change something in family dynamics. But I wonder if that room will be occupied by someone without anyone planning it. For an emergency or something.
So interesting to see what they’ll do to overcome this crisis that didn’t exist until Pru left. I mean they owned a rental (renters should at least cover the cost +1 month at a minimum), owner/partial owner of the Fuse (a happening place we’ve been led to believe and I’d like to think they’re costs there are less than their income), had a boarder (I’ll estimate $500 a month for room and board, if you disagree feel free to adjust), plus Luann’s “tuition” (Community College in California goes for $46/unit, call it $1400 per year for a class load plus fees. Looking a little deeper I was able to raise it to about $4000 for a year). Ok, vehicle to next major arc, let’s hope its one that gets Luann back into a major arc. A focus of Nancy “joining the work force” is so 1970/80’s (or should I say 60’s/70’s).
Maybe this whole scenario is leading up to Nancy going to work. That means Luann and Frank will have to pitch in more at home. And I still think Luann needs to get a job and start paying some rent.
This story is now moving in a positive direction. Frank can let go of his somewhat traditional views of how Nancy should function. And Nancy can get out and and add a new dimension to her life.
Here’s something left over from Pascha yesterday. I just put it on yesterday’s comments, but decided to put it on today’s also. The coronavirus lockdown started on the 26th of March, 2020. It’s interesting that the Bible verse, Isaiah 26:20 says: “Go home my people and lock your doors. Hide yourselves for a little while until the Lord’s anger has passed.” The day and year corresponds with the verse 26:20. Is that just an eerie coincidence, or was it inspired at least 2700 years ago to correspond with what is happening today? It isn’t the first, and won’t be the last “coincidence” that has happened in the Bible.
GnK need to resolve this whole financial (work/rent/etc.) problem that Frank and Nancy are apparently experiencing. They probably will come to some decision because two weeks of haggling over it is becoming a downer.
The “I can do more” line says it all. Nancy might easily outshine Frank as a breadwinner and business manager and maybe that is what Frank is thinking and not wanting; he wants to keep her down; yet she has talents and capabilities that have yet be fully exploited.
The nudist won’t need to use the laundry facilities much. The cat owner is probably a quiet older lady who won’t leave her room much. The renter who needs RV space will have their own bathroom to use.
How do you know this character only has two classes? That is unlikely for a student living at home with her parents. The classes we see her in are the creator’s choice to make story plot points, not any representation of reality, even in Luannverse. Having a job is fine, I think it’s a good thing, even if a student attends a study intense private university such as my neighbor, University of Chicago, but I don’t think it’s realistic, or fair to assume, for what is a fantasy, that reality is such a proof that Luann is basically a lazy, burden.
You know there is one illogical precept to this arc. Pru was paying rent based on money she was making at the Fuse. So the money the DeGroots are worrying about they had already been paying to Pru, who turned around and paid it back to them in rent. They might as well have made room and board part of the compensation package she had. Now that Pru is gone there is nothing that would prevent them from taking that revenue and turning it into income they could use to pay the expenses that Pru was supposedly making from a business they owned she was working for. I mean if Pru were working for another employer and bringing in money from that work, this would make logical sense, but now it does not. I think there is more here than just how we a going make up the expense of our expense.
GnK have been reshaping Luanniverse for some months now. They’ve introduced major new arcs with Gunther/Bets and Tiffany/Hall A denizens.
They have also been thinning the herd or so it seems. Pru is gone. Jack is mostly gone. Zébo, Tara and Nil are maybe gone; if Luann doesn’t return to her T.A. job their characters are in deep trouble. Irma, Al, and even Les to some extent, have been mighty quiet lately; what with Gunther’s time all tied up, so to speak. Bernice has managed to remain as a linking character between Gun/Bets and Tiffany but less and less with Luann. Brad, Toni, Shannon and TJ characters appear in much the same manner as Frank and Nancy. Mostly on Sundays and “intermissions” between arcs.
GnK have to find a way to get Luann back into the dynamic mix with the Big Three (or Four). When she goes off on her own romantic arc (e.g., Quill) it inexorably moves toward total commitment or breakup. Right now, Luann seems to be the least dynamic character in the strip.
As an aside. Luann, Jack and Tara seemed to be the perfect triad. A male friend with minimal sexual overtones (like Gunther was) linked with an exciting female friend (and anti-Bernice). They moved Luann into new and exciting activities. Unfortunately Tara had a dark side; kind of the devil conscience to Jack’s angel conscience.
Sounds like Frank also needs to retreat back into the corporate world for a season. Not a sentence I would wish on too many, but the Fuse venture occasionally caters more to his latent inner hippie than it proves to be a consistently reliable business model.
I should know better than to second guess Greg, but he’s been striking out a lot with his new characters. People liked Pru. She had very interesting possibilities that could have been explored. And, she was established. Just give her a haircut and a makeover and bring her little Broadway butt back to the Fusion stage. There’s no business like show business.
Here’s a scenario that would allow the Evansi to bring COVOID-19 into this world. Fire fighters are among the first responders who encounter people calling for help who are sick with this virus. Toni and Brad are assigned to different shifts (you can’t have family members on the same shift in firefighting, in most departments, because of the very real possibility that a whole family could be killed in a ‘fire event’; I think that did happen in one wildfire in California in the past.) Toni could end up exposed to COVOID-19 and need a place to self-quarantine. Brad’s old room could be that place…
