Amelia’s reputation, swagger, and a sparkling list of adjectives convinces a Big Gunther (nice skull eyes, btw), which saves Amelia the trouble of actually following through.
Several in the last couple of days have pointed out that there’s a lot going on in almost every panel of this strip. Very true.
Careful attention and even re-reading have been recommended and are rewarded by the discovery of little hidden treasures.
Hidden, as is said, in plain sight. Example today, the destruction of the propeller on BG’s beanie in the second panel above. I love these little extras Mr. Henry gifts to us.
It’s what they call lagniappe New Orleans.
It’s like the technique of hiding “Easter Eggs” in movies to reward close attention. My favorite of these is the picture of the X-Man Wolverine, clawed forearms crossed, tucked into a decorative border in the opening title sequences of The Greatest Showman … which starred Hugh Jackman, who also played Wolverine, doncha know. But where his face should have been was an… Easter Egg.
I’m thinking of Chris Farley in “Tommy Boy” who said something like “ I know where you sleep and some night I’m going to do something so bad to you it will make your mother cry”
In stories and movies, the big scary challenger obligingly leans down for the hero to murmur in his ear, as here. Just try it IRL. Ditto the “angry mob” that goes politely silent long enough to hear a speech and be swayed (lookin’ at you, Marc Antony). I ain’t buyin’ it.
Gunther has already flattened one of Spud’s friends who threatened him; why wouldn’t he flatten another? This bothered me because the strip seems to be setting up Amelia to be some kind of feminist hero. If you get the bully to back off just because he’s afraid to hit a girl, that’s some pretty old-fashioned problem solving.

Amelia has a career as a Defence Attorney ahead of her. Or a middle school teacher…same thing.

Anyone else notice the skulls in Gunther’s eyes in second panel?

Yea, he’s buying Spud a choco taco (what IS that, anyway?), with the money he stole from him.

Amelia is a precocious lass. I was like that, not in school, but a more adult than my age.
