Everyone has a roll – Keeping kids out of kitchen is impt too. When I was a kid – me, Grandmother, and Aunt were the cooking crew. My Mom was the clean up crew cause we were exhausted. My brother would be called in to make the iced tea as we were putting dishes out & set them out. My Dad entertained baby sister. It takes a village to feed a village.
A memory: My mother & my husband had an interesting relationship. They certainly didn’t see eye-to-eye on a LOT of things. However, whenever my parents were hosting a party at their house, my husband would follow my mother into the kitchen, she would hand plates of food to him, and he would put them on the table (buffet style), always exactly where she wanted it. They didn’t need to say a word to each other; they both just worked together great. One time my sister’s husband tried to help & my mother chased him out of the kitchen.
Would someone please explain to me what is so hard about putting a turkey in the oven and letting it bake for four hours???? Geez, even I can do that. . .and cooking is my least favorite task (except for dusting). Of course, we don’t do turkey anymore. . .we do filet mignon. . .and that takes even less time.
In non-pandemic times, I would be in Ohio with my sister and her family right now. She prepares for two days and she will call you if she needs help. In fact, if I take an extra day and are there the Wednesday before, she basically throws me out of the house so I’m not underfoot. I go to either the Pro Football Hall of Fame, or the Rock and Roll HoF or the Cleveland Museum of Art. When dinner is on the table, her job is done. I do the dishes, her son and husband clear the table and put the food away.
When I was a kid, Thanksgiving was always a pot-luck affair. Grandma made the turkey and a couple sides and each family brought other items. Last night, my brother helped his daughter make her first pie crust. May each family reading celebrate their own traditions and maybe make some new ones this year.
My son is a chef, he set me straight the first time he cooked dinner, “Stay out of my kitchen!!” I said, “OK, I’ll just sit here with a glass of wine and kibitz.”
I do 90% of the cooking in our house. For yesterday’s feast (held virtually with friends) I made everything except the pumpkin pie. That is her contribution. Before feast I did a drive-around and delivered the pumpkin and chocolate silk pies to friends and full meals to a couple of people that were either quarantined or single.
For about 20 years we had both families for Thanksgiving dinner (being of different religions it was the only family type holiday that both families wanted us for). We stopped doing so only because we had bedbugs and stopped having anyone in the house to prevent getting them again (pretty sure we did not get them from a hotel as we had not traveled in well over 6 months). I then continued cooking Thanksgiving dinner for two us for the past 10 years.
Never in all that time had there been a problem getting dinner ready on time or anything forgotten. This year!!! Husband decided to help and I got all turned around from it. As he was about to carve the turkey it hit me – I had never made the stuffing (from a box) or the mashed potatoes (this year only, from a box as we are not comfortable buying fresh produce) and as I started boiling water to make them – he realized I had not made the gravy.
Just him helping me threw the entire thing off. Luckily they were all quick cooking items.

It’s quite the dinner dance.

Some might even call this sexist – only the women are allowed to help with the cooking?
Looks like Mee Maw’s kitchen, with apparently antique stove and cabinets.

Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth. Besides it’s yucky.

Holiday meal, kitchen, three women, and a cat. That’s how my grandfather’s Yen went and got himself hemidecaudated one Christmas.

It’s the same at my house…my sisters are the “authorized personnel” and I only come into the picture if any help is needed…

Peekaboo seem to aim for the peas! They should put the kitty out before she start to play with those tiny pods!

I’ll always volunteer to help with the clean-up but when preparation is going on, I know to stay well clear!

Maybe Mee Maw should stay OUT of the kitchen and join Rose in some healthy yoga? Not that there’s anything wrong with being overweight of course. :)

Well, too many cooks spoil the recipe. Meemaw was enough for this. As of the others, they could just do well to just chill when Meemaw is around.

Doris Lee’s painting “Thanksgiving” captures the work frenzy, too. It’s at the Art Institute of Chicago. https://images.app.goo.gl/JPxt3MgRX3mgY9Gz5
