    Never heard the ‘six weeks away from spring’ bit. Did Elvis get that mixed up? XD;

Of course, if he did. He’ll never admit it. X3

    Also: Goldie and Lupin. X333

Finally, a newscater, reporter figures it out. No matter whether a groundhog in PA, or CA, spring will arrive in about six weeks. probably a bit early as Easter is early this year.

My dad was born and raised in Punxsutawney, PA, home of the Groundhog. We used to have a PA, Groundhog/PA party this time of year here in the Houston area. But now between the group aging and covid it is over for now. BTW, the movie was filmed in Ohio and the real celebration was outside of town in the woods.

From the movie Groundhog Day: Delbert McClinton sings The Weatherman

Predictions show more cold and snow

The timing is still the same

And spring will come and winter go,

In six weeks as they claim

    …….

    Pucky can’t believe it

What he believed is a scam,

Is it six weeks to warmup?

    Yeah, according to the weatherman!

    …….

    Cold winds blowin’

    Snow is drivin’ everyone insane

    Hard rain’s fallin’

    It’s all the same!

    …….

If precipitation is all a wintry mix

    The groundhog can’t tell

    Elvis is the weathercat

    Elvis is the weathercat

    …….

They say it’s gone say winter’s done.

    But Pucky knows the truth

It’s six weeks or a month and a half

    Until it turns into spring

    …….

So if you’re tired of winter,

    Please understand that

    Someday it will warm up,

    Just ask the weathercat!

How do they know whether the groundhog has seen its shadow or not? The weather might be clear, but the groundhog could have been inattentive, or distracted by its iPhone, or just downright bolshy and thus refusing to look. And how clear does the shadow have to be to count as a shadow?

Have to love Goldie and Lupin doing the fist pump. Yeah Groundhog Day is just around the corner, sometimes catch a bit of it on the Weather Channel, they usually send one of their meteorologists out to cover it. The movie might have been the last Bill Murray movie I watched in the cinema as well.

All right, here it goes. The ground hog lives in a little den by the library in the town and every year they take him.out and transport him to a place outside of town called Gobblers Knob. And once there, amid much pomp and circumstance,is pulled out his fake lair, by people caots and top hats, before the sun even comes up to make his official proclamation, “Hear ye, hear ye! The prognosticator of prognosticators has ….” and makes his weather prediction.

This is not how I was taught it works. Atlanta, Georgia, has its own groundhog, and he almost always agrees with that Northern groundhog. It’s either 6 more weeks of winter or an early spring, 2 different options. And you don’t have to speak Groundhog to know; it just depends on whether it is cloudy or not that day. Of course here in the South winter is mostly over by the end of February.

I once saw a real, live, groundhog in the field across the road on February 2, basking in the sun. Why would groundhogs be afraid of their shadow on February 2 but not on the other days of the year?

I’m in the area where there is a distinct difference between “six weeks of winter” and “siz weeks of winter from now”. The latter puts it about mid-March. The former can paint it in mid-May.

As a child I was confused by all the stories about various ‘heroes’ keeping the ground hog from seeing his shadow because they didn’t want six more weeks of winter. Where I lived having only six more weeks of winter would be a GOOD idea. It never occurred to me (or any of my grade school teachers it seems) that there were places where spring could come in early March and not early (or mid) April.

Groundhogs moved into my woods for the first time a few years ago, but I wouldn’t trust the destructive fatballs as weather indicators. Robin flocks, however, do a good job. When the robins show up, it means we’ll have one final cold spell, then spring shows up a few weeks after that.

’bout time someone figured that one out! lol! Way back before mankind had all these fancy machines to keep us informed of what the weather will be like, mankind had to rely on nature to give them clues, really good clues.

It really is a Groundhog Scam, a Chamber-of-Commerce Stunt and a Slow News Day Filler. So, it gets a bunch of reporters out in the fresh air for a while. As long as nobody drops the groundhog (again), no harm is done.
