I remember water. It was nice. It used to fall from the sky, too. We called it ārainā. The land would form giant bowls of it, called ālakesā, and it would run out and slither through the land like a snake. We called them āriversā. Those were good times.
I grew up in New York in the 70ās and 80ās. I remember those days of alligator street surfing quite well. And the cockroaches were big and nasty. If you hit them with the Sunday edition of the New York Times they would just shrug it off.
Grandpa stories are the best. When my grand-daughter once asked me how old I was (she was 4 at the time) I told her I was so old that, because I was the biggest kid in my class, learning to write on the cave walls, I had to stand at the front of the cave with a spear to keep the dinosaurs out. As she asked more questions, I embellished the story, including how her great-grandmother hated Thanksgiving because it took her so long to make stuffing for a pterodactyl. Grand-daughter was mad at me when she finally learned the truth, having told most of the neighborhood about my fighting dinosaurs, but we have a good laugh about it today.
That may go a step or two beyond embellishment. Thatās almost a 45 level of out-of-touch with the truthā¦ But at least grandpa is entertaining and within legal limits.
Itās a bright beautiful day here, on the Southcoast of Mass.
A good day for a walk, maybe find a bit of muddy water.
Call up the young Panda spirit, Weāll squat down and see whatās living in the muck and water. If I get muddy, Iāll get spoken to. Not the first time for that.
Boring compared to yesterday. How about: āThis is typical ethnic/racial stereotyping about Asians and alligators from an old White man. And donāt get me started on the blatant sexism!ā
And I miss the days of strong rains flooding the streets all the time too. I miss the days when the neighbors would all tell you they got a case of crabs every summer,
Where I lived in Florida, the streets would often flood after bad storms. After Hurricane Charley, kids were sailing down the streets on Sunfish boats, while their parents were using canoes and rowboats to get around in my neighborhood for several days. Didnāt help that one of the near-by earthen dams had broken.

By any chance, did the grandfather grow up to become a stunt-double for Roger Moore in Live and Let Die?

There were plenty of kids who would ride on the outside of the subway or the project elevators, so alligators are not that radical.
