Emerson is being pranked here. His famous observation was, “A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds.”
I’ve always thought that the key word here was “foolish.” Nothing wrong with consistency when facts have been established. Or even if there’s a strong likelihood that something is so, but again based on facts.
But the seeker of truth, scientist or not, must always be ready to abandon an idea shown to be false… no matter how long lived or how popular that idea may be.
In regard to Danae’s continuation: even if the map is a fake someone made it and planted it for her to find. It’s not a fungus like a mushroom that just sprang up. That makes it worth pursuing. Of course having no sense of direction and not knowing your right hand from your left will make it hard to follow.
“Nothing could be more obvious than that the earth is stable and unmoving, and that we are in the center of the Universe. Modern Western science takes its beginning from the denial of this common-sense axiom.” —Daniel J. Boorstin
Looks like her ‘army’ reached the end of its patience and left the battlefield. We did that for news channels that still tout stolen elections, anti-vaxxers, and anti-mask theory. I bet both the lost army and we are the better for it.
There is an old Legend here in Maine that says that Blackbeard the Pirate buried treasure somewhere along the coast on a Island , A few problems with this, one , which Island ( look at a map of Maine ) , two , Dig on a Maine Island and you run into what Stephen King calls Maine’s ultimate truth ; Granite !
A lot of adults have sunk money into the supposed treasure on that island they keep profiling on what used to be the history channel. On about as much evidence as Dana’s.

Seems she is being selective about the “facts” again. Now, where have I heard this story before. I know I’ve heard it before?

Well said. You know, people don’t really know many hobgoblins any more. Tolkien sort of left them out of the story.

I think Wiley has it wrong here. Facts are something ignored by the tenaciously faithful mind and the hobgoblin of the open minded.

We in America, prove, “Facts are the hobgoblin of the tenaciously faithful mind.” Though I would substitute “closed” for “faithful.”
