We DID adopt a 22 year old. Sort of. Our grandkid whose mother did her best to cause serious mental difficulty… or worse. Better than Calvin, for sure, but it’s even better now that she DOES have her own apartment…
Careful Dad , Calvin one day will be your Caretaker ! ( Blessed are the Caretakers , Right now what I wouldn’t give for 4-5 hours uninterrupted sleep )
Whooo, is this comic dated. By the time Calvin turned 25, he was likely still living with his parents like most people his age when the economy and the job market went down the crapper.
Don’t expect kids to go to sleep as soon as they go to bed. It don’t matter if it’s 7pm, the kid will stay awake as long as he can. I did. We didn’t have TVs in our rooms or computers or cellphones, but we did have books. I stayed awake reading books, until I fell asleep.
This is one of my favorite Calvin and Hobbes strips. I remember plenty of times as a kid when I would be a big ol’ sourpuss and my parents would tell me to lose the attitude, causing me to sarcastically act like I was the happiest kid on Earth just to be a smart alek. Of course, that would just make things worse for me. And boy, do Calvin’s facial expressions really sell this strip. It’s brilliant.
We were under strict bedtimes of 8:30 before school and 9 PM before days off. Later it extended to 9 and 10 PM. Eventually we weren’t even told and simply went to bed. Today I try to stay between 10PM and 6AM, but those middle aged bouts of sleeplessness tend to disrupt my circadian rhythm.
I know the feeling, trying to sleep at night. Now adults and retired with 3 fur babies 2 of the 3 want up with us for their cheerios, that is safe for dogs. They do get their dog food.
Calvin’s sarcastic, horrifically exaggerated grin here is one of the funniest visual gags ever in the comic, and the only time I’ve ever seen such a gag done. This has stuck with me for 30+ years.
This reminds me of my Mom. There were 4 of us kids and she was always threatening to get an apartment for her and Dad; leaving us to fend for ourselves, I guess — LOLOL — she was a funny woman who adored her family.
I would of yanked Dad’s tie right down to my level, grab him by the collar and said: “listen bub, I’m in a POed mood. (In a Yami voice) Do you want your bedtime to be more PERMANENT?”

From the earliest age, humans have had to adhere to rigid schedules.
It’s no wonder Calvin is PO’d!!

I’ve long suspected that Calvin was an unwanted child.
Dad’s comment in the last panel proves it!!

If a 25 year old had an apartment, they would be renting it out and living at mum’s and dad’s home so as to pay down the mortgage.

Dad stop complaining. You enjoyed that night 9 months before Calvin was born.
