Depends on the “Group” you join – if you join a group ABOUT something – Like building a Cobra – then you get useful interactions – along with the odd idiot
Explains my pinned Tweet, eh? So do you know any ReaganRINOs?
Today’s fake Republicans want America to fail. Always campaigning for themselves, never governing for the people.Easiest campaign? Blame Democrats for failures caused by GOP obstructionism.
Facebook is for crafts and hobbies and family, Twitter is for news, graphs, and debate about economics, politics, philosophy, and epidemiology (lately). Both are for adorable animal videos. To me, social media is like the web itself: it contains everything, both good and bad. Yes, I know, social media have algorithms that push towards the bad, but somehow that hasn’t happened to me.
So Facebook is Anger, Instagram is Envy, Tiktok is Pride, Twitter is Avarice. I assume Onlyfans is Lust, so that just leaves Gluttony and Sloth to account for.
I’ll never understand why people allow misinformation and follow strangers that post things they don’t like, I have over 200 friends on facebook the vast majority I don’t know, they belong to groups I’m in or friends of people I know, if they post something I don’t like ( I don’t do politics on facebook) I simply unfollow or unfriend them, it’s so easy, why people allow themselves to get sucked down the rabbit hole is beyond me.
I haven’t gotten into the misinformed and angry parts of Facebook, yet. So far, its just the medium I use on Sunday at 4PM for my worship service I conduct. I occasionally use it for connecting with friends, less so recently.
All social media does is put you on Front Street where total strangers will throw mud at you in order to feel better about themselves which is a total disaster for anyone seeking approval.
You know…you DO get to pick who you friend or don’t friend on FB. Avoid any random “news” and go straight to your page and the pages of your actual friends. If any of your FB friends starts any stuff that really goes against your principles, ignore or unfriend them. I’ve found FB to be the best way to casually keep in touch with relatives and old friends. I still call and visit the people closest to me, but FB lets me easily keep up with a wider group of people. Social media woes are sometimes more about the individual than the media. I say all of this as someone who was born in the early ’60s, and I joined FB just 5 years ago.
Many years ago, I read that at least half of effective communication in face-to-face settings is non-verbal. That’s why TV was more effective than radio, and why commercials always show you smiling users with testimonials instead of (probably more informative) dull, dry facts and bar graphs. To the extent that social media take the visuals, facial expressions, vocal tones, and body language literally out of the picture, opportunities for misunderstanding are seriously higher.
Likewise, it’s way easier to degenerate into insults and putdowns if you’re not looking your victim right in the eye while you do it.
I haven’t removed myself from the F place, but I have been ignoring it and all the emails I still get, for almost a year now. I attribute that to my depression, but now I think it’s just good instincts. ;-)
Gotta’ love Alex, the smartest one in the strip.(yeah, I said it Kim lovers!) Does anyone remember when Alex lost her wide-eyed innocence and started to be drawn with the world-weary eyes of the rest of the adults? (Excepting dear Boopsie)
joined FaceBook 2010. because I did I got to play an Amati and a Strad (Amati much better), got invited to play in a Russian music festival, met my co-producer/engineer who offers free studio/mixing, sold a bunch of merchandise, and met some ppl who became actual friends. that’s for starters. I know about the fucktons of catastrophically horrible aspects, but that’s no reason to deny the positive ones. oh, and my wife was able to contact the woman from India who had been her BF in high school, who she had feared been killed for political reasons.
Grrrr. Just last night I was bumped from my work station to another group I’ve never worked with before. There the workers on either side of me were on their phone almost the whole time. I wanted to say, “Dude, you do know you’re being video monitored? Once the Covid precautions go down and they reopen the lockers, they’re going to make us leave our phones there now that they see everyone using them. Be more discrete!”
I reluctantly had to use my phone the previous night. I’m allowed to use wireless headphones if they have on-board audio. It should also draw audio from my phone automatically if I leave the phone setup properly, which I didn’t. Shortly after using my phone for a few seconds, I got a message reminding me not to use a phone at the work station. So warnings for me and not for them? Maybe they’re on the chopping block already. I don’t see how anyone can be so addicted to social media that they have to be on the phone all the time.
I’ve reconnected with a zillion old friends using Facebook. I never thought yet thought of myself as a Satanist for doing this! Whoa! Reality is stranger than fiction!

Interesting to see how Joanie has aged (unlike most of the others on this strip).
Of course, with kids like JJ and Jeff, it’s understandable.

The problem with looking for like minds to share thoughts with on “social media” is finding like minds that disagree with you.
