The ironic thing is that while it might help getting your first job, after that, it really doesn’t matter. Same for your GPA. Your job performance and experience are far more important. Even the first job interview, if you come across as a dud, someone from a “lesser” school with a personality will get the job.

The right wing is so fixated on the idea that no one should get something for nothing that they either ignore the value of one person’s education to the society as a whole or don’t understand that it exists. The average college graduate pays about $7800 more a year in federal taxes than the average high school graduate. Over 30 years, that totals about $234,000. If that’s divided by the 4 years it takes to get a college education, the government breaks even if it paid every student $58,500 a year to attend school. This doesn’t even consider that with the degree, the person is less likely to ever need unemployment or welfare, and that more students would complete high school if they could see it as the way to a good job. They would also be paying a larger amount in all other types of taxes, social security and Medicare. The best investment we could make to keep America strong is to not just forgive all student loans but to make all higher education, including trade schools, etc totally free, as long as the student is making decent grades. There is no better way to spend money than, to give our people every opportunity to be the best they can be. Yes, It’s good for them individually, but the country is made up of individuals, so what’s good for one is good for the country. We don’t, even during a time of high unemployment, have so much a lack of jobs as we have a lack of people who have the skills to perform the jobs that are available- in other words, a lack of education.

I have a Bachelor’s in CIS, (Computer Information Systems). If I were starting my career now, I would skip college, and all the expense, and pursue industry certifications starting with CompTIA. It’s the elitist liberals that look down their nose at anyone without a college degree. Taking pride in, and finding enjoyment in, ones work will take you further than a piece of paper from any college or university.

Must be quite a diner if, out of a seemingly random sample of patrons, every single person but Pig has a kid who was just admitted to such a prestigious school. I’m not even sure I buy that they all have kids of the correct age.

So, it’s more for the status than for the quality of the education received at the school. That’s too bad. Hillsdale College makes sure all students are well-educated on the U.S. Constitution so they can make informed decisions on voting and other civic functions. Landmark College accommodates students with special needs, including those who have dyslexia, some forms of autism, or other matters that would set them back in another school despite their intelligence. Maharishi International University bases its curriculum on the premise that knowledge is structured in consciousness; students become more creative, manage stress better than the cultural mainstream, and many go on to excel in graduate school in other institutions of higher learning. There are also state and community colleges that treat students as though they really matter and prepare them for the workforce and the professions. And not all faculty have a political axe to grind. Choose quality over status, critical thinking skills over critical race theory.
