On candy-stripe legs the spider man comes/Softly through the shadow of the evening sun/Stealing past the windows of the blissfully dead/Looking for the victim shivering in bed/Searching out fear in the gathering gloom/And suddenly a movement in the corner of the room/And there is nothing I can do when I realise with fright/That the spider man is having me for dinner tonight — The Cure, “Lullaby”
“Monster” can mean anything much larger than one would expect. A large mosquito tapes to around 0.4 inches – so a mosquito one inch long would be a monster. The largest spider is the Goliath birdeater (in terms of leg span and weight – there this one skinny dude with longer legs) with an eleven inch leg span. If I was visiting the area where he was found, and discovered a spider the size of a dinner plate under my bed I might thing, “What a monster!” but it would only show my ignorance of a perfectly normal-sized spider.
Without digging them out, it seems to me the 1974 original Dungeons & Dragons Monsters & Treasure booklet and the 1977 Monster Manual include Large Spiders.

How did this boy suddenly develop insomnia? I wonder.

Kids check under their beds for monsters. Monsters check under their own beds for ME.

Yep, that is something that a big sister would do.

She didn’t technically say that there actually was a spider, either.

Dr. Frankenstein is not a monster either. He just makes them.

He sleeps with his helmet on? Kid needs help before it too late.

Living in the suburbs of Colombo, Sri Lanka, I woke up to find there was a rat in my bedroom. Not a small one, either.

Okay, time for my favorite Bad Dad joke. A little boy is cowering under the covers.
Dad: “I’m calling the bogeyman and telling him not to come to our house.”
Under the bed, a cell phone starts to ring…

Maybe the spiders will scare off the monsters?

That’s what sisters are for. The Corinthian will visit you in your sleep.

As Calvin said in one strip, (not an exact quote) Darkness helps one see his fears more clearly.
