I believe it was around the time my grandson was in school that the letters stated a specific pencil, pen, colored pencils, etc so that no one had anything different than anyone else. I suppose they were trying to prevent supply envy. ¯\(ツ)/¯
I’d stick pencils out my nostrils, mouth, hair, and ears…usually while a classmate was giving a presentation of some sort. They could never keep a straight face, and I got a free pass to the principal’s office. Ahh, the memories.
I hated shopping for school supplies with my grandkids because the lists were so precise down to the color of the folders you needed. We had to go to three stores to get the purple folder because heaven forbid one student use orange. When the kids were in school, the lists were more general like “6 folders”. When I was in school, there was suggestions like “something to hold the classwork in”. I remember having a spiral notebook with 2 pairs of pockets that I used for 3 classes as the pockets separated the spiral into 3 sections, not a separate specific color folder for each class.
Ah yes, way back in the previous century (1961?), my mom bought a box of pencils that had at least 1,000 #2’s. I think my younger sibling was still using them when I graduated in 1973. No choice, it was those. I did get to pick the slide rule I wanted though later on. :-)

Seriously, Hamish MacPherson, choose pencils you wouldn’t want to stick in your nose.

Pick stormy ones for Hammie, to go with Zoe’s rainbow ones.

Would it bother Hammie if we told him he wasn’t the first kid to stick those particular pencils up his nose today?

This one reminds me of the Amazon TV ad where a kid similarly sticks crayons in his nose.
