My wife scoffed at the egotists who bought vanity plates until the ones issued for her new car had as the only letters “UGH.” She was livid and coughed up the money for a vanity plate.
In college my oldest had a huge 1974 Pontiac convertible with the license plates “SNAPPER”. I told my buddy at work about it. He replied, “It’s red, huh.” And I had to ask him, “How did you know?”.
The Count and Countess have a close friend whose vanity plate is a Vietnam Veteran plate with USMC66 numerals… the branch and one of the years he was there.
We are lucky, VA hasn’t gone for the high priced spread . . . yet. For a nominal increase over the usual fee, car owners can choose almost any combination of up to 8 letters or 6 or 7 if he/she chooses one with a visual element. Works out ok.
Talk about “Meta”; I bought a “Vanity” License Plate from a “Town and Country” bank, with the letters “TC”, for my Toyota Corolla Town and Country. Later, with the same plates, I bought a Toyota Celica… ☺
I know it’s common to refer to personalized license plates as “vanity plates”, but in my experience most of them are extolling something other than the car’s owner. You wouldn’t believe how many variations I’ve seen here in Wisconsin on the general theme of “GO PACK”, including (I swear) “GOPACK9”, which implies to me that everything from just plain “GOPACK” all the way up to “GOPACK8” was already taken. (There’s a 7-character max, otherwise I’m sure some Aaron Rodgers fan would’ve already snapped up “GOPACK12”.)

You can do that with a bumper sticker.

I would rather spend money making the inside of my car look better, not the outside.

Marge Gunderson: Say, Lou, didya hear the one about the guy who couldn’t afford personalized plates, so he went and changed his name to J3L2404?
Lou: Yah, that’s a good one.

The cleverest I heard of was “PENNYLN” — on a blue Suburban. Beatles fans will get it more quickly than others.
I saw one that read “MSMOLY.” I looked at it and immediately said, “Good golly!” (I was faster on the uptake that day than usual.)
