It’s the Canon in D major, not Canon D.

Years ago RCA issued classical music albums with titles like “Mozart’s Greatest Hits” and “Bach’s Greatest Hits”. But one was titled “Pachelbel’s Greatest Hit”, with eight versions in one album.

Is it legal to change the key and play Pachelbel’s Canon in D, in C?

And if it’s legal, could it be considered an upgrade?

In his lifetime, Pachelbel was renowned for his organ and other keyboard music, whereas today he is also recognized as an important composer of church and chamber music.

The canon in D has been pinched a couple of times, most notably by QI whose theme uses a reggae flavored phrase from the work. Of course that’s just my opinion. And unlike the rest of the internet, I might be wrong.

Look up Pachelbel’s rant on YouTube. It’s a revelation. It’s also howlingly funny.

Plus, the tempo was taken way too mind-numbingly slow by some popular ensembles. Even more, there’s a good jig Pachelbel paired with it.

There are a few classics I like. William Tell and 1812 come to mind. Lots of brilliant work out there but I am not brilliant enough to appreciate

Whatever it is named, it was good enough to have been written between 1680-90 and to have been resurrected to great success in 1919. Not a lot of stuff, classical or otherwise, written in 1900’s is going to last that long.

There used to be a sheet music store on Wabash Avenue in Chicago called Carl Fischer. Someone went in there once asking for the music for the Taco Bell Canon.

it’s not repetitive except for the cello part. Otherwise a nicely built little piece. (and I teach composition).

I’ve been told it was written as a class assignment. Don’t know if that’s true.

It is the best piece of music to walk your daughter down the aisle! and if you need a father/daughter song, Louis Armstrong’s “It’s a Wonderful World” you will never forget it!!!!!

    Don’t forget the perky gigue!

I like the Canon in D major but can’t stand it played as a dirge or overly sweet.
