I’ve been a vegetarian since ‘73. There are a lot of good vegetarian meat-like products out there. My wife wasn’t a vegetarian, but she enjoyed quite a few of those as well… vegetarian burgers, chicken patties, hot dogs, bologna and breakfast sausages were her favorites.
That’s because Jon bought the wrong brand, Garfield. I’ve bought some that really do taste VERY CLOSE to the real deal. Season it right (Don’t argue: We all add some, even ketchup, which is a liquid seasoning), and you got a healthy alternative when the doc orders you to eat better.
Some of the veggie burgers are really quite good. Until the stores stopped stocking them, the best was a chipotle burger by Gardein. It was my favorite Saturday meal.
When I went vegan 40 years ago, Garfield would have been right. Today, I make my own that don’t taste like beef but are delicious and way healthier than eating dead cow flesh. If I get nostalgic for a “real” burger I go to Burger King and get an Impossible burger.
I have no idea why people would want to make vegetable matter taste like meat. If you like vegetables and don’t want to eat meat, why try to eat something that tastes like meat? If you’re hungry for meat, you might just be craving the kinds of proteins that are in the meat because that’s what humans are designed for. Just eat meat and give your body what it needs.
Several years ago I developed a heart murmur. to treat it I went vegetarian for a year and a half. Cleaned out all my arteries and veins, and my diabetes went away. No hjelp with the heart valve, Turned out it was scar tissue from rheumatics disease. What I did discover is that they now have all kinds of substitutes that are really good.

I’ve tried a couple of plant based burgers that were edible. They tasted nothing like meat, but they were edible.

Cows eat grass to make meat, so I guess you are just eating the grass and cutting out the middle man?
Actually there are several vegetable patties that I like, but the ones I like have flavor of their own and do not try to be meat.

Garfield would not touch a soy burger, too much estrogen could interact badly whit his enormous amount of Ghrelin hormone (or give him knockers).

Just remember that if god intended for us to be vegetarians, he/she would not have made cows and pigs so tasty.
