I have never needed or wanted anything from Amazon and two gifts were cheap crap and returned; the third gift could have been great but was defective and Amazon refused to help solve problem or replace it. Feh!
I must confess that shopping this way is addicting. We order a lot of stuff….especially little specific things rather than searching high and low in retail stores, only to come up empty. And then we forget so it’s always a surprise when we get a package. Christmas every day! LOL.
This is the debate between brick and mortar and click and order.
Supporting the local economy is good. So we shop at WalMart, Exxon/Mobile, national level chain restaurants and supermarkets …
At least the people who work at these establishments work locally, pay taxes locally and spend money on goods and services locally.
But there is also the business of economy of scale. Smaller retailers who may buy dozens of an item do not have the same clout at the bargaining table as a WalMart that might buy 100,000 of the same item.
Then there are those obscure, niche items which may have a demand of 10,000 items nationwide. Some small mom and pop outfit might manufacture such an item, but how do they advertise it and distribute it?
You also have to compare 100 trips by 100 cars to 100 locations to pick up 100 items vs. a single electric truck delivering those same 100 items on an optimized route.
In the olden days when you had to allow 4 to 6 weeks for delivery, there was an incentive to find the item locally. Now when almost everything can be delivered the next day, that incentive is missing.
I am not saying that any of this is good or bad, but it does mean the world is changing.
I started ordering from Amazon when it was a book store because I could order obscure and specialist history books and receive them in days that otherwise I would have to try to order from a bookstore (often in Europe) and wait months to get, if I ever got them at all.
I need something, from Amazon, placing the order soon, because the GFs birthday is up soon in February. And if I err in my choice, I’ll be shopping ( not really but) for a new GF.
My daughter paid for a year of Amazon for me during 2020. She wanted me to stay home as much as possible. I still get Amazon, and I do watch Prime sometimes. I order what I need and when I need it, and don’t scroll through everything looking for things I didn’t know I needed.

I use mail order, but never amazon, and find everything I need. I resent amazon popping up every time I google everything/anything.
